ignition problem

I had a problem today when I tried to start my mercruiser 5/0 1999 2 barrel engine. When I turned the key it started, as soon as I released the key it shut down if I held the key to the start position it would run . I plan on getting a new ignition switch tomorrow anything else that could cause this. Thanks Tom
