ignition switch....boat doesn't start

here is the situation.... when putting the key in the ignition switch...lights, accessories come on but when turning the key to start the boat ....I get nothing....so I rigged a wire coming from the starter that I just touch the positive on the battery to start the boat.
can anyone dianose the problem????
