Incredible Navy Armada at Ulithi in 1944

Interesting that they would group so many ships in one place. I guess the lessons of Pearl Harbor were forgotten.
 
It was probably pretty obvious the Japanese were at such a disadvantage material wise by 1945 that another Pearl Harbor was impossible. Even the kamikazes were not a viable option for influencing the outcome except for increasing the amount of American casualties. The U.S. At that point was producing close to 50% of the worlds GDP and if we didn't rightfully end the war with the A-bomb the outcome would have still been the same only more Americans would have needlessly died.

And surely Ulithi had all kinds of defense in depth, both on the water and above, with the flattops and battlewagons inside that ring. I doubt very seriously the brass was over-confident or unsuspecting. Still, I did wonder why the carriers appeared line-up in a row, rather than anchored randomly.
