Ingram Bay Marina

Visit White Point Marina on the Shannnon Branch of the Yeocomico. Extremely clean, very quiet, if that's what you like.

I'll chime in on Hope Springs Marina.. I lived aboard there for the summer of 09 and had a great time, great facility. The owner is a great guy to deal with and they have a new bathhouse/clubhouse that was completed after I left. Boating in that area is no different then boating in the upper bay. Actually conditions can get snotty quick out there. You have colonial beach, fairview beach, and of course DC. No more debris floating than anywhere else in the bay. I'll likely be back there or right in DC this season. Traffic is insane in the summer though. GL

thanks easter, I will check them out as well. So far it appears Olverson's is getting the overwhelming nod though. Hard to beat folks with nothing but good experiences with them.

The traffic thing may wind up being an issue but it is a risk I will take. After a year if I don't like it I can always move. We will only be living in MD until August of 2012 at any rate. Then we will be semi-retiring to FL. I am already on a waiting list for a slip at Patrick AFB in the Cape Canaveral area.

Anyway 3-4 hours to get to the boat that is already in the water is really not that bad compared to what I am already used to so I think I can suck it up.

John,
Going to Cocoa next? I lived and worked there (on Patrick AFB) for a while back around 1998-99. Loved that area. Where else can you fish the ocean, bays, rivers, watch Shuttle launches from a bar table on a beach and by a beach towel at 3:00 AM! I am jealous! (You aren't with Dyncorp are you?)

That is the plan Mike. The Patrick AFB thing is recent. We knew we would retire to FL east coast but just did not know where until a few months ago. When I found out a slip at Patrick was on $6/ft and that included electric it sort of made the choice for us. But yeah, the area is great. I have been there a few times but not since 2002 as I retired from the AF in 2004. I was there in March 98 for a couple of days. Stayed at the Space Coast Inn.

I work for Kaiser Permanente on the new construction side. We are building in MD and VA which is how I happened to wind up coming here. My deal with them is up in Aug 2012 but I do have the option of extending for 1 year if I like.

John,
If you stop at any of the other marinas on the Yeocomico that have been mentioned, White Point, Port Kinsale or Kinsale Harbor, they are all in Westmoreland County and probably have a higher tax rate than Northumberland.

John, if you are retiring in FL, then you will have to pay the tax to FL. That is why we just paid up in MD cause sooner or later we were going to be in FL long enough to have to pay and the penalties are very severe. You only have to pay the tax once, so MD got our money.

John, I'm in Rockville and keep my boat in Colonial Beach. It's an easy hour and fifty minute ride. (Not down 95 though...)

Great marina and town.
Let me know if you'd like more info.

Well, I went to Olverson's today. I am pretty sure that will be the place we wind up. I met with Steve and his wife and liked them right off. The drive was not to terrible. I left union station at 2 and was there at 4:20. Although I did take state highways down the middle of MD. Coming back to Bethesda I took the interstate route. Left Olverson's at 5 and was eating dinner at 7:30. And I am will to bet it is a gorgeous drive in the summer.

With regards to the sales tax. I have heard two stories with regards to this. If you return you can only stay in state 179 days at a time. This should not be an issue for us as we intend to spend a couple months at a time over in the bahamas. Maybe longer and maybe even farther south. That will depend on whether fuel tops out at $6/gal or $10/gal. The other piece I was told is that you pay for the permit to exempt from tax for 90 days (with a 90 day extension available) and then you have to remove the vessel and register it elsewhere. You can not return for 6 months but after that there is no liability for the sales tax. At any rate I will be covered by one or the other or both.

Between myself and my wife we paid more into federal taxes than I made as an E-6 in the military just over 10 years ago. Add in state and SSN plus Medicare and I could have refit with new engines. It pisses me off to no end. Last year I used quicken to keep track of taxes paid. It was a mistake as I was ready to quit and go on unemployment like everyone else. Between income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, vehicle license taxes..... I paid nearly 60% of my income to taxes. It is why many of my friends have relocated to other countries. And why if things do not change in the next several years I will be joining them. I will not pay a dime to taxes that I can avoid. And even if I only avoid them for a year or two years there is a possibility I will avoid them entirely through regulation.

edited to ad: The tax part should be in NBR not here so I will refrain in the future. But it is the only thing in life that truly pisses me off.
