My old GPS was wired to the ignition switch. I would like to wire the new one to the fuse panel. Can I attach the power wire (red) to the positive bus terminal seeing that it has an in line fuse? If so should I add a toggle switch to isolate the GPS?

You can wire directly to the DC buss as long as the fuse is at or near the buss. I guess when you are asking about a switch to isolated the positive DC buss you mean the on/off switch would be after the fuse and between the source and GPS? Yes you can do that, I see no problems with powering a GPS unit that way. The assumptions I am making are this is more than just a GPS antenna? It also involves a display be it a GPS reciever, MFD or GPS/ Chart plotter?
If you are talking about a NMEA2000 GPS that would get it's power from the positive power bias "T", assuming it's an all in one GPS puck that transmits its data over a network only?

I am installing a Garmin 546s. Like I said my idea is to tie directly into the fuse panel positive terminal (the wire that supplies the panel from the battery) with the red + wire, which has an inline 3amp fuse, and attach the black - wire to a spare ground terminal on the panel. The fuse panel is right behind the dash where the GPS is going.
The switch would be between the fuse and the GPS. Which would allow me to secure power going to the GPS but I am not even sure that is needed, after all you turn off the GPS, but could be useful if I wanted to remove the GPS for security reasons.
I really do not want the GPS to be on a shared terminal with another accessory, especially if the other accessory fuse was larger then 3amp.
