I am switching insurance providers and now need a survey. Is there a difference between an "insurance" survey and a full survey? What would be included in an insurance survey? Am I better off getting a full survey as opposed to an insurance survey? I have an area of fiberglass that needs repair (about $3000) but I don't plan to do it until next spring. Am I asking for trouble by getting a survey done now with this damage evident? The boat is worth about $3000 and there is no lien.

Thanks for any guidance.

the less you tell the underwriter, the better! typically an insurance survey only covers what affects the safety and seaworthiness of the boat.

Or you can have the problem fixed now, then see if it passes the survey after wards. However, that is only a good idea if you hire the work out.

Just remember that after you spend $3000.00 on the repair that the boat is probably still only worth 3 grand.

buckeye, Give us more information please. What type vessel is this? year, make, model, type power. Why do you want to invest $3000.00 in a boat thats only worth $3000.00? Not unless the vessel means something to you.

An insurance survey is typicaly done just to place the value of the boat. No mechanicals would be included, just overall condition and value of the vessel. If the fiberglass damage is more than just cosmetic, that would be a problem for the insurer.
