I've only seen a dye marker once from sea level - and it was from some jackass doing jackass things. But it was very, VERY noticeable! Not sure of it's utility for a surface search, but since they're intended for visibility to aircraft, I can only assume they work well in daylight. No firsthand experience on aircraft searches - I don't have pretty enough hair or a sensitive enough nature to be an airdale. I'm a knuckledragging Lifeboat guy, I stay on the surface and get down and dirty instead of staying aloft in luxury. (There's a very good natured but very creative rivalry between the aviation side and the Lifeboat side of SAR. They assume we live in kennels when we're not underway, we assume they paint each others toenails when they're not airborne, and will die young from all the toxic hair products)
