Trying to put wireless security on our dock/boat but our Internet is so sketchy we cannot rely on it. Besides, the wireless systems all seem to need a router on-board. I need suggestions, please.

If someone can give me a good Internet solution, I can deal with the security issue.

Thanks in advance

Well, why is the Internet sketchy, what are y using, how far from a house if private dock or is it at a marina with poor wifi?

Need more details if y want suggestions... You could use a booster if connecting to a Marina wifi or your could run a cable from a house...

What is th problem with putting a router?

Great questions: the wifi is at a marina and there is no electrical outlet on the fuel dock to attach the extender. The extender does no good inside our boat as it is too far from Marina wifi.

We have satellite from DISH so my next step is to try and get Internet from them but I know it is costly.

Was hoping I was simply overlooking a simple fix to put a router on our boat. If there is no dsl or phone service not sure how a router would be set up.

Dish Network satellite internet can't even be installed on a piling as they move too much (there are very strict rules as you'd be transmitting as well as receiving). I you're receiving at least weak marina wifi outside of your boat you may find a solution with an external antenna. There are many options for this. $500 if you want turnkey, much, much less if you can configure things yourself.

The Rogue is nice (I have two) but at over $300 (plus antenna) if one is savvy enough the Ubiquity Bullet at around $90 is a better value (considering that is what a Rogue Wave is but with different software).

Let's start with the basics.

Donna, can you pick up wifi signal outside of your boat?

You need a quality external WiFi unit like the Ubiquiti Bullet or I prefer the Rocket M2 (MIMO), an external antenna and that should feed an internal bridge/ router/w/built in AP.
Then you should have plenty of signal to use encryption.

Integrate the above with a USB Cellular modem and you'll be far better off than using any sat. based WiFi service.

I am using the PDQ Allpro wifi signal booster. PDQConnect.com. I am actually using it right now in my motorhome in Bar Harbor Maine. I move it back and forth between the Motorhome and our boat. They say it will pick up wifi up to three miles, but I have picked it up around a half mile.

Anyone else use the Rouge. I've been looking into it. Not sure how far I want to take it...either just better reception aboard or to really create a network aboard.

I have a Rogue using an external antenna on the arch, wired to a Netgear wireless hub in the cabin. works great - the only thing I would do different (and probably will do next spring) is wire the entire system in DC rather than AC, as to use it underway/at anchor we currently need to run the genny.

I suggest you do both create a network on-board and install an external bridge router for best C/(N+I).
