I am considering a tender with a 48 horsepower Evinrude (1996?). Were there any serous problems with that model?

Thank you.

If it's two-cylinder loop charged it's based on the three-cylinder looper they brought out in the late 1960s and should be excellent. In the days I'm familiar with, 60s to 80s vintage outboards, we mixed the oil and gas right in the fuel tank. Some of the earlier oil mixing systems [1980s] were troublesome. By 1996 I'd think you'd be OK but some owners bypass the mixer and just add oil to the gas to avoid potential oil starvation problems.
Can you get it checked by a qualified mechanic?

Thank you. It is the two cylinder. I may not be able to get it checked by a mechanic, but I intend to start it with the "water muffs". I live more than 200 miles from the boat and do not want to make a wasted trip. If the motor was known to have problems, I would not go. If is it not known to have problems (i.e. fitch) I will make the trip and see how the whole package looks. The motor is on the low horsepower side for the size of the boat.

The 48 was the sorta stripped down 50. Some of the "Specials" they left off power trim, others they left off oil injection. Those motors were long perfected before OMC had problems with the fichts or whatever they were. With decent care and using clean fuel and OEM oil, they are as reliable as sunrise. If the price is right and it has been cared for, you won't find a more solid motor anywhere.

And I hate OMCs. I'm purely a Merc guy, but that is a heck of a good fishing motor.

Some of those peculiar ratings had to do with a chenge in HP ratings. Part of the reason Mercury was faster historically was they rated their HP at the propshaft, while OMC was rated at the crankshaft. That meant the OMC's propshaft HP [PSHP] was less than advertised. 235 fell to 175, 140 to 110, 115 to 88, stuff like that. The 48 could have been the former 55 or 60, whatever they peaked the rated HP of the loop twin at.

The 48, 88 and 118 were simply "Special" editions of the 50, 90 and 120 with a few bells and whistles left off to sell cheaper.
