Is lanolin for real?

I just got done cleaning the crap off my outdrives that was left over from the power-wash done after the fall haul-out. Not a fun job and I would like to minimize work for next year. I am looking for the best solution I can find to keeping the outdrives relativly clean. The previous owner of my boat never painted them (Volvo DP)and I don't want to either as it doesn't look good and is difficult to apply and maintain. The outdrives are in good shape mechanically with no piting or corrosion.

My question: is there a clear outdrive coating that I can use to inhibit growth. I have read that Lanolin cream (for diaper rashes) is a possible coating. Is this for real or some hoax? Is there any other clear coating that anyone would recommend? I know that regular use and midseason in water scrubbing will also be needed.

Thanks

I bought some anhydrous lanolin from a crafts supplier on line last year. I gooped it on my shafts, props, struts, rudders and tabs. This is right on the bare metal. I had only a very slight amount of growth - no barnacles. A friend tried one of the heavy lanolin content ointments from a drug store and had significantly more growth. The nice part, was that what little growth I had scraped right off.

I just bought another 5 lb can and I'm doing it again this year. Works for me!

Hi Bob!

Where in the area did you get the lanolin? Getting ready to haul out for cleaning and would like to try this.

Delaware Jim.

I'm going to try this too. The Trilux does not work well. Just google Anhydrous lanolin and you will find several suppliers. I will update during the season to let you know if it works. I plan to leave several areas uncoated to see if there is any discernable growth on these areas as compared to the coated areas.

Sorry Jim for not checking in sooner. TheoMD is right. I bought it online following the google search. I tried but couldn't find it locally. I've purchased from two sources so far. It's all pretty much the same stuff, just go for the best deal you can find.

I put it on my outdrive (Volvo) last year and I mean alot and was slightly satisfied. I had read somewhere in a boating magazine about it working better than Trilux. It works about the same however it is a whole lot cheaper. Also read that Teflon works well too. I bought some at Boaters World and applied it to my props and trim tabs to see if it works just as well or better. Teflon won't come off in the water.

Actually I use and swear by Penaten diaper rash cream. I used it on my kids when they were in Diapers 30 years ago and I have been using it on my running gear and inflatable bottom ever since.
It has a high zinc content and and Lanolin and is very thick so it does not wash off.
Johnson and Johnson makes it in Germany. There is also desitin but does not stay on as well.

Canadian Pharmacies carry it and some US specialty stores. google it.
