This thing has always been an issue. 3/4 of the time it doesn't work and trips the breaker. This has been ongoing since 1992. I got a new electric unit under warranty. Seemed better but still tripped the breaker. I then thought that the wire was a size too small and replaced it with larger wire. It was better but did not fix it. I installed a battery next to the head to eliminate the voltage drop. It helped somewhat. This year I put in a rebuild kit for it. I think its working better; only time will tell.
My question is the joker valve. The boat did not originally come with one. The rebuild kit did. Should I install it or leave it out? I would rather do it before the start of the season since things are clean.

Sounds like something was and still is wrong with that head. What model is it?

It also sounds like it could be a bad curcuit breaker. I had a problem with my running lights popping the breaker. I did everything i could think of to remedy the problem but nothing worked. Then "flash of brilliance" I put in a new circuit breaker. Problem solved. I'm not saying that's your problem but it may be worth the effort to give it a try.

I'd install the joker, but I don't think the joker valve is the cause of the problem.

IMO the breaker tripping could be from several reasons:
1)too small a breaker or bad breaker (you probably need a 25 amp breaker, check the manual)
2)pump binding and overloading motor and tripping breaker. (disassemble, clean and lubricate with soap)
3)corrosion in motor binding the armature and tripping breaker. (disassamble, clean, and pray)
4)short in the motor. (replace/rebuild the motor) $$$
