I have had several porti potties over the years, vac-u-flush for last16 years, now have Jabsco mauual flush system. My question is should and when should the water supply valve be turned off. Also the reason for the answer. Thanks Vic and whom ever else may chime in.

The valve should be open when physically flushing the head. Then, when the toilet bowl has cleared of paper and effluent, move the lever to the dry position and continue pumping for 10, 12 or more strokes. If the head is in good shape, the dry flushing will push the contents six feet or more through the hose(s), just from the compressed air pressure of pumping the toilet, and should clear the lines between the toilet and the holding tank.

This will result in you using the least possible amount of water, and will extend the time between holding tank pumpouts. With Lake Champlain being holding tank-only, I'm sure that is one of your prime considerations. Additionally, keeping the lines as empty as possible will reduce chances of the connecting hose permeating over time, and causing the boat to stink. When a hose permeates, the sewage odor goes right through the walls of the hose and into the living areas of the boat. Once that happens, the only way to stop the smell is to replace the hose(s).

Thanks Vic. Good explaination. This refers to the lever mounted on the toilet.
How about the valve installed ahead of the unit that acts something like a seacock in that it can determine whether sea water is available to the toilet or not available.
Please bear with me. As I said, I'm new to this type system.
Thanks again,
Ron

Many safety conscious boaters close -all- seacocks when they leave the boat in the water unattended, as the leading cause of boats sinking is at the dock with a failed hose attached to an open seacock thru-hull. Some only open the head inlet water seacock just long enough to use the head, others open it when they board, close it when they leave.

And of course, there are the others who never close seacocks at all, placing their faith in the plastic hoses ( IMHO, a mistake ).

Bill-Thanks. Of course this makes good sense.

Hey Vic-one more thing (as Columbo of TV fame says)-when pumping out this system. Any special procedures or cautions? With the vacuflush we used to pump a pail of water through after pump out. Still necessary?? Also, seacock open or close and wet-dry valve which position.
Thank You.
Ron

Dumy, I'm guessing you're talking about pumping out the holding tank. Nothing special necessary. It's a good idea to refill it partway with clean water, then pump it out again, to sort of flush it out. But otherwise, nothing special required.
