Jet ski rider faces boating while intoxicated charge
(Original publication: June 24, 2007)
A jet-skier from Yonkers was stopped twice in two hours by police boats on the Hudson River today, and was charged the second time with boating while intoxicated.
Joseph Mangieri, 49, was first stopped for speeding by a Westchester County Police Marine Unit boat about 3 p.m. near Croton Point Park, police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said.
Mangieri was issued a summons for speeding. State navigation law says that boats or watercraft that are within 100 feet of anchored boats cannot go faster than 5 mph.
At 4:45 p.m., the second of two county police boats patrolling the Hudson yesterday stopped Mangieri because he was trailing a larger boat and jumping over its wake, like a ramp, O'Leary said. Police issued him a citation for reckless operation under navigation law and noticed an odor of alcohol.
Mangieri then failed sobriety tests and was charged with boating while intoxicated, O'Leary said.
Detective Guy Repicky and Sgt. James Luciano impounded the jet ski and took Mangieri to County Police headquarters to be processed. He was released without bail and is due in Croton Village Court on July 11.
