Just nasty on the GSB yesterday

Who was lucky enough to play "Victory at Sea" yesterday in the Great South Bay?

The winds were a steady 20K from the WSW that produced a nasty 3' and 4' short steep chop.

Anyone running in a small boat from FI to the west on the north side of the bay got pounded! And running east was no pic nic either!

We went out in the bowrider, took a short ride through Massapequa Cove, turned around and anchored near home for the afternoon. Even in the 5 mile zone it was too choppy to be comfortable.
 
It was NASTY....... we took a ride in the little boat.......got beat up bad. Had to go back in and get the big gun.

The blow boats must have loved it.............
 
I returned to my slip in Lindenhurst from Tobay at about 7:00 PM last night. I took the Amityville cut and then headed east. It was pretty sloppy out there.
 
I was fortunate enough to only have to cross the Moriches yesterday from WHB. Even the usually flat water there had a steady short chop, but wasn't too bad. I was only imagining what the GSB was like. I don't miss that bay on windy days like yesterday.
 
Loved the salt spray slap I received on the way home in the Lindenhust Cut about 4:30 yesterday...
 
Yes heading back to Anchorage (west) got soaked from head to toe, put up camper canvas to minimize spray.
 
U guys should have been in the sound with us and all tru the peconic.....

That was some snot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I must say the boat handled much better then i could have ever dreamed!!!

We spent the night about 90 miles out in the ocean fishing in about 1500' of water. Wind picked up a little overnight but not bad, trolled for 3 hours in the morning and then headed home. At first it looked like the predicted winds might not show up as it was getting calmer during the ride home but then 35 miles out or so it started to pick up and got rougher as we got closer in. Had it on the beam though and not a big deal, didn't have to slow down from normal cruise speed. Would have been a tough ride going straight into it though for boats heading back from out east.

We too enjoyed the morning/afternoon pounding. Riding out of Block, after a long week of hanging and beaching, Monday we were met with heavy winds at a steady 20 knot clip. Could only make 19 to 22 knots. BI Sound was a rage of steep chop and Gardiners Bay wasn't much better. Just holding the plotter line was tough and I resigned myself to just make steady progress. Once we hit the Peconics it started up all over again. Ended up cutting our cruise short stayed over in WHB to regroup. Returned home Tuesday AM and except for the old no water in Moriches Bay, the ride was pretty sweet.

I was so scared yesterday at around 4 p.m. Sure the water was snotty, but the knuckelheads were out in full force. I can't believe there can be that many people out there who don't have the slightest clue.
Next year on labor day , I will be tied up at the marina.

That's why I waited until after 7:00 PM to start heading back. There was very little traffic at that time. I did run across two boats with defective running lights.
On a better note: I decided to take a little joy ride after dinner tonight and the conditions were fantastic. Almost no wind, the water was like glass, and very little traffic.
 
coming home on sunday night around 7pm i had a kite surfer who kept cutting across my bow forcing me to alter course. came within about 100' a couple of times and there were times where the spray blinded my view of him.
