Went out to fish with a friend couple of saturdays ago.Left the dock about 8 PM in buddy's 26' Parker. Light drizzle, some far off lightening. Cruised out thru Boca Inlet and headed towards DelRay. Seas were 1-2 ft chop and raining.
Put on our rain gear and caught a couple of keepers.
At 10.30 PM, seas picked up to a pretty rough chop and we were getting tossed around. Raining harder now,(I took a slide across the deck and hit a cooler or something)Ribs are still aching.
Both agreed we had enough and pulled anchor.
Now the visibilty was poor.Just as we were about1/2 mile from the inlet,a bolt of lightning comes straight down and hits something on the beach directly across from us, Loudest blast I have ever heard. Knocks out the red and green channel marker lights and our depth finder/GPS goes black.Pretty spooky for a while. In a few min. the GPS lights up but the channel markers are dark. My freind Bill is very familiar with the Boca inlet area and we slowly made way south till we found the channel Sea buoy and we could see the red lights on the Boca Inlet Bridge. Made it through the Jetties and into the calm ICW. FEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Just posted this on the SFBC because I know some of our local boaters know the Boca inlet and will relate to my story.
Anyway nothing else seems to be happening on this Forum, Where is everybody???
 
I was thinking this part of the forum was dead and was just about to make it official.
A full month without any post, this used to be the most active part of this webside and look at it now!

I agree. So, let's take it back and get it active again. :)

Anyway, you're a lot braver than me. I don't like Boca Inlet in the day time in good weather. No way I'd try coming in at night with no marker lights. How was the tide running?

I used to do the loop out Hillsboro and in Boca. It wasn't unusual for the inlet to have crests high enough that you want to hold position just on the back side by pumping the throttles. There was one time at low tide I felt a vibration when I pumped the throttle. I was hitting bottom right in the center and I only draw 18" when sitting. I since have pretty much limited my use of that inlet to high tide.

I ve extended my welcome on the water more than once and it s easy to miss or dismiss the warning signs, isn't it?

Nowadays, I rely heavily on online weather radar to monitor cells and make the decision. Also, having a nav app on your phone can be a life saver with a dry bag obviously..

But hey, as I posted in ATC a few days ago, last Saturday night I misjudged the wind and we ended in the drink, spending 20 minutes unrigging the catboat and then an hour bailing...

As to lack of traffic here, I think most of us post in ATC instead so this really ends up being just for LocKnow
 
Bob,It was an outgoing tide, 10 ft depth thru the inlet. I dont mind the inlet in good weather.Sitting in the inlet,Waiting for the bridge opening on a windy day with smaller boats moving in and out can be fun. Glad I use Hillsboro 99% of the time.
 
Pascal, Anyone get pictures of your Walrus impersonation while trying to right the boat??
If so, lets see them.
 
Let see if any new members to SFBC would like to get togeather on a weekend. By land or by Sea.
Where would be a good place for a raft up or an eatery for a snack and a Bev.?
Would be nice to see and talk about our boats and trips.

Sounds like a good idea to me. For me, because of distance, a land based meet up would be best. But, hey, I'm open to any and all suggestions. :)

Heck, I'll even bring Bosun and Ms. Bosun.

With a 23' closed clearance my boat passes OK. But, that inlet, strong outgoing tide and an easterly wind can surely make things interesting.

Like you said, stick with Hillsboro. For me, coming from the north I usually go out Lake Worth on the way to West End or Lucaya.

I would be up for it. It would be a good excuse to get on the boat!
