kayak vs tug

Who was it? TimR that always used to advocate for kayaker's rights in NY Harbor? I think the expression is "dead right". In other words you may be correct but you'll get yourself killed.

I know the Guntersville dam area well. I'm guess he was close to lock, current running, and tried to cut across in front of the tug/barge for whatever reason.....

The things people do!!! Several years ago my wife and I encountered a kid on a sail board who capsized on the Alabama pas. We passed him a line and moved him to shallow water and advised that with boat and barge traffic that was not a good place to be. Returning an hour or so later we see the same kid, now wedged under the bow of a moored barge hanging onto a line with an outgoing tide. Pulled him to safety again, they never learn!

I can't imagine the barge would be moving very quickly near a lock.

Please note I wrote “moored”, not moving any no mention of a lock! Tide was outgoing creating a current wedging his board under the slanted bow of the moored barge!

I think Boat was back on the kayak incident at Guntersville

Maybe the other kayaker will fill in the details. In shallow areas a kayak can be very useful for fishing, birding, sightseeing, etc. but they simply aren't safe to be in open waters with lots of traffic.
