Hey all...planning a trip to Kent Island over the next couple of weeks. I'll be trailering my 25' boat from Southern NJ. I want to stay over for one night...so need a ramp where I can leave the truck overnight. It would be ideal if I can find a marina with a ramp that could work for the truck and for a slip.

Many years ago we did a similar trip with a 23' footer. We started at Kent Narrows and cruised to St. Michaels for a long weekend. We launched at the Piney Narrows public ramp which, if I remember correctly, is directly across from Red Eyes. We parked the truck and trailer without any problems.

Rob is correct its a great ramp and a short trip to St Michaels. On your return from St Michaels take a ride up the Wye river beautiful area... You won't want to go back to the Delaware. Joe
 
The ramp is just about under the route 50 high bridge and the parking is effectively covered parking as it is under the bridge. The current just out from the ramp can get a bit fierce so watch out and be prepared after you leave the ramp as there are bridge piers real close.
I think you may require a launch licence and you may be able to get that at the bait shop in the parking lot of Fishermans Inn. Since I do not trail I have never had to get one. Remember the channel in Kent Narrows is a 6 mph zone and they enforce it.
There are many marinas around Kent Narrows and some of the restaurants give a free ovenight slip when you eat there. Mears Marina has an olympic sized pool and is on the opposite side from the ramp. It is within walking distance of all the resturants. Two are right outside the gate and then there is Red Eye's Dock Bar between the two restaurants. They all have web sites.

Or, I will drive your boat to Kent for you and you can just drive down without the trailer. I will even pay for gas. Made that trip a few times when buying mine and need an excuse to get down there. It is a day or less on your boat.
 
You will need a Queen Annes county sticker to keep your car there. There are several places in the area that you can buy a sticker. Chesapeake Outdoors is the closest that I am aware of. It is about 2 miles west on your right, west of the ramp. Get there by going rte 18. It parallels rte 301/50. If you dont get a sticker you will get ticketed. None of the marinas in the area have ramps. If you stay in Kent narrows you can go to the Dock bars and stay for free. Red eyes dock bar accross from the ramp,The Big Owl, a few hundred yds south of the bridge on the east shorline, just down from their is the Crab Deck, afew hundred yds from their on the same side is the Jetty w/bands and dock. Go to St. Michaels and visit then come back to the Narrows. Lots of fun.

Hey all,

Thanks for the help. I headed down to KI on Friday..launched at Piney Narrows. Got the seasonal permit from Chesapeake Outdoors, it was a little more but I figure I'll be back sometime this season. The ramp was good..had no problems launching and it wasn't crowded. I was launching by myself so it takes me a little bit longer.

I got a slip at Mears Point. The marina was very nice. Not used to fixed docks though..took me a little while to get squared away..especially the foward pilings. Friday took a cruise around the Island, had dinner, then a beer at Red Eyes. Mears Point had a free breakfast..not too bad. Saturday took a cruise to Annapolis, the water was very, very choppy. Had whitecaps on the way back. Got to take the boat down Ego Alley...very cool. Was able to dock, walked the town, had lunch. Then back to the Narrows loaded up and came home. I'll post some pics one they are developed. Thanks again for the info.

Very nice and I'm pleased you enjoyed your short time on the Chesapeake Bay.
There is so much more to do and see on the largest estuary in the U.S. so feel free to come back often!

Great photos, thanks for sharing them. You could make that trip a hundred times and see something different each time. Kent Narrows is extremely central to many areas. I am a little dissapointed that you didnt hit all of the Dock Bars in the narrows. Now you will need to come back and make that your goal.

Thanks Mikee, I'm slowly making my way around the upper Chesapeake. Annapolis and Kent Island are the farthest South that I have been. Done the C&D, The Elk, the Bohemia, Susquehanna, Sassafras, Still Pond, Fairlee Creek (one of my favs), and Baltimore. Plenty more to see though!
