I have a 2002 Kohler 5E with a "hunting" problem. It slows down, then speeds up several times, then after that, sometimes will then run fine, or will shut down. Sometimes it will restart and run fine, sometimes it will restart with the same problem, others it won't start at all. It happens sporadically and is hard to duplicate. I cannot find anything common to when this problem occures. It might run 100 hours with no problem, then it will happen twice in one weekend <at the worst times>.

I have changes all the fuel filters, checked fuel lines, checked anti-siphoning valve, having enough fuel in the tank, etc. If I unplug the electric fuel pump, it behaves the same way as when I have my problem pop up. I believe it is fuel related and think it is the fuel pump. I've been told that the fuel pump, being electic, either works or doesn't. Is this true? Secondly, is there a controller of some sort that sends power to the pump? In other words, does the voltage vary or is it constant 12V? Could it be a controller/electrical problem?

It is still under warantee <year 4 of 5>, but will cost me $100 for the service call. The pump itself is about $100. I'm wondering about gambling and buying the pump and installing it myself. I'm looking for some advice. Thanks for any comments
