New Plugs. The old ones looked fine to me however repplaced them and it runs like a champ....Thank you antonio.

From my experience, it takes more than 30 secs to get hot enough for the high temp sensor to shut it down. It should have cooled down enough after sitting a couple of hours to still be too hot from the previous run. The water pump/ impeller is always a good place to start though.

Well the gen woudnt run because the belt had snapped. Checked the raw water pump and couldnt turn it. I figuerd the impleller imploaded took the back off the pump and saw the impeller fans were in the wrong direction. odd because it has been working fine. Figured it happened when the belt snapped. Impeller was in fin condition. Any rate reset the impeller and put the new belt on. Start and ran for 10 min just fine. Shut her down at the gen and noticed that as the engine stops it almost takes a 1/8 turn backwards and it reverses the impeller fans. The squeal is caused by the belt being bound while trying to reverse the fans inside the pump housing. A little more research shows that Kohler had a service bulleting sb-609 to address this condition. Odd thing is it look slike it was in 01, this gen was installed in 03? any rate Kohler 8E be aware if you hav this issue.

Initially, I thought this was the "BEST" genny made. 5 year parts & labor warranty !! Had to be good. Had great warranty work covered. Now (17 years later) have a shutdown problem that I can't resolve so far. Runs fine with low load but shuts down with higher load....20A or higher.

gentleman let's hold the horses. No one of you had posted the model #. there is an issue with a 2003 genny which probably is the 7.3E or ECD. Mr. Bob J I think yours is a 7.5R. There are two compltely different models. Please describe the model#s crrectly I probably can help you. SB609 is refferent to the catlyst converter on the 7.3ECD and 5ECD Which has another upgrade and other SB#.When you want discuss generator problems PLEASE describe the right MODEL # and make.

Sorry I thought you had a smaller model. Yes was a warranty for those pumps the impeller was to big for the housing. There were a few warranties done by my area. I hope you get some back from kohler. This happens when original customers do not register their products which are asked by manufacturers. Other wise you would get a notice on the mail for a kohler called for inspection. Replace pump and belt.

Antonio, I joined in the conversation because I am also having a shut down issue but my genny is a Kohler 6.5KW CZ. It is "NOT" an overheating issue but I still can't resolve my problem. Low load, <20A; no problem. Over 20A & unit will shut down in short order. Didn't mean to high jack topic re other size gennys.

So I replaced the water pump and all seemed well for about 20 min. Gen is surging, If I look at the front of the unit i can see the throtle moving back and forth, not sure why. There is no load on the gen. Coolent level is good. Water flow is fine. Any ideas?

did you call? It's what he does for a living make the call as long as he is offering!

mine had a simalr issue - I couldnt figure it out so a mechanic came to check on the Big blocks and the genny.....turns out it was a perfect storm of things: He tested all 5 kill switches and they seemed okay so checked carb.....

1) crap in carb - looked like white crystals. Cleaned it out and it ran 4 minutes and died.
2) kept losing fuel prime - found there was no antisiphon valve so it was pulling fuel and air from the big blocks (yeah its all on one fuel manifold - dont ask). Then it ran okay but died under AC load.
3) found by pulling spark plug boots that center plug was fouled. Replaced plugs and runs like a champ.

for waht it is worth.

Those rubber impellers commonly are found backwards. It doesn’t matter because they will go the correct way when the engine is started. It is very common for an engine to kick back a little when stopped thus parking the impeller backwards.

The issue with this pump was that once they were reversed they became bound and could not be spun back into the right dorection. I spoke with Antonio(super Guy) recomended a Back flush and swapping the plugs. That is wat will be done tonight.

My BAD !! Somehow let this slide by; will do so today !

Did call Antonio & we discussed my problem. He wanted to know add'l info which I told him I'd look it up & get back to him. Bottom line; I replaced in-line fuel filter & genny appears to be running very well. When I left last w/e genny was running with both A/Cs running plus 5A add'l on amp meter. I'm guessing it's running as it should.

Bob J. sorry! I didn't call you back. Anytime tomorrow Fri. or saturday call me I will help .
