What is the best way to get the oil out of my generator. The drain plug is at the bottom of the motor and if I drain it from there it will make some mess. I was thinking about sucking it out of the dipstick hole. How does everyone do it.

I have an oil xchanger built in to mine, but when I didn't I used a tube on the dipstick.
After dipstick is done, you can open bottom to make sure you got it all.
Genny's don't hold much oil.

Thanks Dave. I figured that was the way to do it. Than put a pad underneath and open the drain. Its a Kohler 7.3 and holds 1.4 quarts of oil with filter change. I tore into the generator today to get to know it. Not that complicated.

You should check and/or change impellers too.
Also there is a zinc in the heat exchanger on that genny.
I may have some spart part, like impeller and zincs for that model as I had the 7.3 on my old Regal.
I now have the kohler 9.3ecd diesel.

if you don't want to install an oil change pump system, install a small hose to the drain plug. put a valve on the line at the drain plug connection and a cap on the threaded end of the hose. leave the hose strapped to the inside of the generator cover with a zip tie. when you need to change the oil the hose can be opened and poured into a waiting gas can etc. any hydraulic shop can make one up for you if you give them the thread sizes needed.

Are you sure there isn't already a drain hose attached to drain plug? Every Kohler I've owned came that way from the factory with a brass plug screwed into the end.

This model comes only with the little shut off valve add a pc 12" hose after oil is hot and just drain into a container.
