Hi, All,
I'm looking at rebuilding the Kubota D950 (3 cyl. diesel) engine on my Onan MKDK genset, and I have some questions.

(1) Has anyone heard of Kumar Brothers? Their rebuild kits are in the $550 range, whereas OEM Kubota is about $200 more.

(2) What are your thoughts on re-sleeving the engine versus honing the sleeves now in place? Cylinders have some slight scoring, not terrible but still needs to be addressed. New sleeves are about $70 each, plus shop cost for replacement (not sure yet what that would be or what honing the current sleeves in place would be, if that's practical anyway); and

(3) What is an indicator for needing a 0.5mm oversize piston versus standard?

Many thanks for your thoughts. I want to do this right.

Either kit would include Pistons & Rings, Wrist Pin, Wrist Pin Bushings, Circlips, Main bearings, Rod Bearings, Thrust Bearings, All Seals & Gaskets.

That's a good price for the Kit. Labor out of the boat 8 to 10 max 12 hours.Re-sleeving depends on the depth of the scores probably more affordable Re-sleeve versus labor on the honing.

I would re sleeve. After all the work why not do the best job and remove the worry?

If it's the original generator engine I would go for the re sleeve.

My opinion, is definitely re-sleeve and use OEM rebuild kit. This is a major job, do it properly and have a remanufactured engine with a long life ahead versus unknown bearing supplier and piston/ring suppliers etc. It is standard practice in a diesel remanufactured engine to use new sleeves and OEM pistons, not to bore oversize due to reduced cylinder wall thickness etc. Honing the cylinder is only to seat new rings so if there is any measurable wear, and if they are scored there is probably cylinder ellipticity, then re-sleeve.
