Well, we're about ready to head north from Ludington, MI up the Lake Michigan coast. The plan at the moment is to get as far as Harbor Springs, MI. I'm going to try to document some of the journey on my blog. Feel free to look in if you so desire.

Thanks for posting. I'm going to keep an eye on your blog. We've been up and down the Chesapeake numerous times as well as 5 trips to SE Florida and the Abacos in the Bahamas. But I haven't seen the lakes yet and that's on my list of places to cruise. Have a great trip!

We enjoy staying at Petoskey Marina, although it has been a while; very well run and near lots of shopping and services. You can take a beautiful 3 mile walk through the woods to Bay Harbor Marina and enjoy lunch at the Knot and some shopping (boring). We take a taxi from Petoskey to Harbor Springs - shopping (boring), lunch or dinner. Or taxi to Bay Harbor Yacht Club for shopping (boring) and dinner. Petoskey is a nice town to walk around and shop. Example: after carefully planning and packing for a trip around the Lake I quickly found out I had forgotten to bring some needed clothing. When we arrived in Petoskey my first stop was at an old time haberdashery. I avoid docking at Bay Harbor $$$$ and the boat move to Harbor Springs can be an all day affair while you wait for a slip to open up. Check out the Michigan harbor docking reservation service while traveling. We used it - can't remember which location - and it was great. Have Fun!

Got out of Ludington today but had to duck into Leland when seas built to an uncomfortable level. Was surprised to find the transient slip rate nearly doubled from two years ago. Seems the state of Michigan thinks I can afford to contribute a bit more. $60 for a 30' slip.

My dockmate just returned from a 3 week trip from Lake St. Clair to Beaver Island and back......Thats a fuel bill I do not want! :OL

Bliss,

You were dead on regarding the Little Traverse Bay area. We stayed at Petoskey for 4 nights (one extra weather day) and really enjoyed our stay. The dinghy ride down to Petoskey State Park and the beach there was outstanding. Fishing was even decent. We did a 30 minute tour of Bay Harbor on our way out of the bay. I got the feeling that my money wasn't green enough for the Harbor Springs crowd so we skipped that entirely and came south into Lake Charlevoix at Boyne City. Harborage marina. So far, a very good decision. This is nice. Three more days and we have to quit and go earn another tank of gas.
