Planning a cruise around Lake Ontario the middle of July. Any advice on places to stop and eat and see would be appreciated. Time is not an issue.
Heading out from Clayton, NY and crusing the Canadian side first.

Thanks Joyce and Ray

I can offer you up to 72 hours free at our visitor docks or my own slip if you stop in.
I am leaving July 22 for Alex Bay and area and will be out 10 days. We are a great place for an
overnight stop, 2 fine restaurants within a 3 minute walk. 17 nm east of Toronto.

Thanks for the invite. We may just take you up on it. I'm guessing we may be in the Cobourg area around the 22nd.

Ray

Coboug is always our first overnight on the way east, may see you there.

All we need now is the weather to start to improve. Looks like another damp weekend.

Take the Bay of Quinte to avoid the usual rough water at the NE end of the lake. Bellville and Trenton in the bay are great stops. Also going through the Murray canal with the swing bridge and the guy that holds out the can for the toll is pretty cool too. Enjoy your trip!

Thanks Ron, We plan on stopping at one of those 2 places. Any good spots on your end of the lake on the American side?
Ray

My preference would be Belleville at Myers pier with Picton as #1 in the bay. Trenton is a distant third.
A little known side trip is up the Napanee river at Deseronto to the town of Napanee. It is not on the charts but is buoyed all the way by the Quinte Conservation authority. The town park has deep water and an honor system paybox, $5 o'nite and $5 power washrooms but no showers.

Note to travellers from the US
Most Ontario Marinas and Yacht Clubs require $2 million dollars in Liability insurance which may be a basic boat policy and an additional Umbrella policy to meet that amount.
Just an FYI if your coverage differs.

Is this new? We have never been asked B-4. We carry 1.3 million between umbrella and regular policy.
Thanks for the Napanee tip.

Ray

About the last two years Ray, most marina will not bother you with that coverage, but Ontario Place may be sticky.
We still turn a blind eye to our American reciprocal visitors coverages as the south side of the lake has lower
requirements in their clubs.

Not much on the Western US end - Wilson might be worth a stop. Olcott used to have cheap fuel at the public launch. Oak Orchard is pretty but not much around there. Never been up the lower Niagara, but I understand dockage is failry limited at both the US and CA sides. Port Delhousie (still in CA) is probably the best stop on the western end south shore.

Ray, I was just in Olcott and Wilson a couple weeks ago salmon fishing, there really isn't much there but I would say Wilson is the nicer of the two harbors. We launched our fishing boat at the mouth of the Niagara River and I noticed a sail club over on the Ca side which would be Niagara on the Lake which is cute little town with things to do and places to eat. Just down from there is St Catharines. I stayed there last year after having problems in the Welland, not much to do but really nice people. When operating in this area watch which county you are in and make sure you report every time you come and go. BTW...Wilson has the video phone for US reporting.

Good luck
Niles

If you need to gas up in the Wilson - Olcott area, make the extra six mile run and fill up in Olcott, close to buck a gallon cheaper at the Town of Newfane municipal marina than at the private marina's in Wilson.

If you are looking for a party port, Wilson is the better option. The Wilson Boat House Restaurant is very good. I keep my boat docked in Olcott and personally prefer the quieter atmosphere, it is more of a fishing port, which is what i do with my boat.

Tim, we were up there the weekend of the big derby 5/14 and the bite was horrible. Have fishing got better since then?

Thanks
Niles

Niles, After a really sucky start to the season, it just finally got good the past week or so. Over the Memorial Day Weekend we had over 30 bites on Saturday (just dad and I, 4 rods in the water) and close to that on Monday.

Gary, no diesel in Newfane, that you have to go to Wilson for.

Tim

Great info guys, thanks. Living in Clayton we are quite used to popping back and forth between the 2 borders, Again thanks.
Ray

How's the trip going Ray?? Hope you and Joyce are enjoying it. Were off to Ribfest/Poker Run this weekend. We decided to just go to Brockville again.
