I have a 1998 350 Mariner. I believe that river water is leaking in at the corner of the swim platform but not sure. I have noticed that the 1999 350 Mariner has spray guards on the sides. Has anyone had this problem and what did u do to fix it?

any through bolt can leak butcheck the rudder shafts before tearibg things apart.

My Bennett trim tabs were leaking on my 98 350 Mariner. The sump pump was coming on once per hour. It was hard to see where the water was coming from because it was leaking from the tabs but then channeling behind some fiberglass. We pulled her out and easy fix.

I had a leak I couldn't figure out. I had salt water in the stern bilge. I vacuumed it out and looked all over but there was no leak. After a couple of trips I noticed there was salt water in the stern bilge again. I thought someone was messing with me. The next trip, while underway I opened the hatch and watched for the water. It was coming from behind the bulkhead seperating the swim platform area. It only leaked when under way. To make a long story short, the water was coming in the thru hull bolts holding the exhaust fitting. I used 5200 and rebolted the exhaust fitting and the leak stopped.

BillyK...What model of Carver do you have? I have a 356 with a water leak only under power and so far it has eluded me, but this sounds plausible.

Naut,

I have the same model 2001 356 Motoryacht. On either side of the swim platform I have access holes. From here you can see the exaust hose and thru hull fitting. If you do, open them up and have someone else drive the boat. You might want to tie yourself on because it gets a little hairy bending over to look into the hole. You will need a flashlight and its awkward getting in the right spot. I only had a little drip so it may take some time to see. To repair you will need someone flexible with thin arms on the swim platform to hold the nuts, unscrew and pull the thru hull fitting away from the hull. I put a little 5200 in each hole and around the fitting. Push back in and rebolt. It is a simple job if the thin armed person is competent, otherwise have a few extra nuts. Sorry I have to add, the boat needs to be out of the water to do this.
Hope this helps.

Have friend who bought 01 356 last year. had water coming in when up on plane, found out was leaking on corners of swimplatform where the top was mounted to hull. factory had left about 1/4' gap open where top & bottom met. sealed up and has not leaked since. you could see the gap right under the moulding.
good place to check.
we found leak by doing what billy said above
good luck

Our 98 350 Mariner was leaking at the swim platform where the top was joined to the hull ( 2 years ago). Took off the rub rail, 5200 the joint and the leak stopped. This year, our leak cam from the flange at the engine exhaust. Hard to detect as it sits so far in the corner at the rear. Pulled the boat yesterday, unscrewed the thru hull bolts, pulled our the flange enough to 5200 around it and resealed. Will put in today and expect that the leak has been sealed. Looks like Carver did not do a very good job of sealing joints, etc. Thanks to all for your thoughts.

BILLY K...YOU DID IT!!! I just had my wife and son on the boat today to drive it on plane while I looked at the exhaust through the two access holes....and loe and behold, the port exhaust is leaking between thru-hull and hull of boat. Like you said, a little tricky to see with a flashlight and mirror, but I saw it. FWIW...I had my zodiac up on davits on the swim platform, so I did not feel to worried back there...but with-out it there, it would be an experience. I will put up with the leak until the fall when I pull the boat for the winter lay-up. Thanks again...the forum works. CHEERS

Tipsea,

Glad it was fixed. Let us know how it goes after a week or two.

I believe they are talking about the white round thread on type covers on the sides.
27boat27- was wondering how everything turned out and which one you bought, etc... if it was in another thread I missed it.

I ended up with the 1999 Carver 356 with the 7.4l Crusaders. I am getting new elbows next week and have a few other minor issues to remedy and will be ready for the maiden voyage Memorial Day weekend. Luckily I made into the slip the first time without any damage. I am beginning to design a hard top to replace the canvas up top. New radar and GPS on the way. It is going to be an exciting week.

Your going to love the custom hardtop. One of the best design changes I made to my Mainship 40SB. It will allow you to add a decent solar array, antennass and an AC unit camper style if needed. That should really look nice on a Carver 356!
Good luck I would love to see pictures of the finished project. Are you having boh sides finished? I did and would recommend running the largest wire chases you can. Also have a wire mesh screen installed for a counterpoise lightning protection it will hardly add anything to the cost. It's amazing the amount of wire I have in my hardtop chases, I'm not sure I could pull a single CAT5 cable now with all the stuff on my hardtop.
