Leaving & Returning to Fire Island Slip

Hi,
Are there any Fire Island Marina's (Watch Hill, Kismet, etc) where you can go in the morning, pay for the day, leave a for a little while and return later?

We do that at Davis Park. You must tie off your slip to protect yourself.

Rob, not to question why not.. ok why not ? I am sure there is logic behind this. I am thinking someone doing a close-line across the neck ? If so I agree and answered my own question... but I am sure others have crossrd from pole to pole. Better Pole to cleat..
 
pole to pole......someone my hang their laundry on it.......
 
So better to tie diagonal from pole to deck cleat? Is this done often, I'm not looking to aggravate people.

I recall reading a year or so ago, maybe even here. Someone came in at night and did not see the pole to pole line and a person in the back got very hurt or even worse.. Maybe an RO will recall and repost. But people do it all the time. If done this way at least add something like florescent tape or dish towels tied hanging a cross the line.
 
If we leave lines or elect line on dock, no one comes in on your slip.

Yes people tie off their slips all the time ! Just to be safe never tie off pole to pole ! Pole to dock is always safest

Pole to dock on a diagonal? Makes sense but I have never seen it. I have seen plenty just leave their lines and electrical line behind as notice to an incoming captain.
 
Yes pole to cleat. Lots of danger going. Pole to pole.

1. When you come in you have to hold while someone unites from boat. Not easy in wind. If on cleat someone on dock can help.
2. I once saw guy tie off pole to pole and rope slid down to below water level. He got rope wrapped on prop. Was ugly.
3. Rope could decapitate someone if they didn't see it.

So lots of good reasons.
 
A few years ago, I was in the Searay and went to go visit a friend at Tobay. Same situation, boat left the slip and left a line across it to hold the slip. I checked with my buddy to make sure it was ok to use the slip for an hour as another one was going to open and I would move. Kids who run the dock said no problem. I never changed his lines or moved his lines, I used what was there and put them back where I found them. I added to what I needed.

Well 15 minutes after I tied up, I get a boat sounding his horn, I looked over and its the guy whose "slip" I was in. So I get on the boat and I go to move and now I am sitting drifting waiting for another boat to pull out so I get his slip. I finally get a slip dock, as I am tying up this looney jumps onto my boat and starts screaming at me. Calling me every name in the book for "stealing his slip" I said when you are done yelling and you can talk to me come back and talk. He refused. I told him to get off my boat before I remove him from the boat. (im not a big guy, but when I lose my temper watch out). He finally gets off the boat and now the kids who run the dock finally came down to see whats going on. Everyone around explained what they say and all was good.

The guy never came over to apologize for freaking out.
