This is probably a Vic question:

My Lectrasan (older) macerator motor quit running. Upon removal and inspection I found that one of the well worn brushes had hung-up. I cleaned it all up and now it works, but I'm going to need new brushes -- and I might as well do the other motor as well. Any idea where to get these? Is there a Raritan part number?

Thanks very much,

Robert

local electric motor rebulid shop will have them but you will need the sample or dimensions.

I'm sorry, Raritan doesn't offer replacement brushes for the Lecrtra/San motors. A variety of different motor manufacturers has been used through the years since the Lectra/San came onto the market in 1974. The motors themselves, are interchangeable from one series to another, but brushes aren't available.

As was mentioned, you'd be best off going to an electric motor shop to try and get them.

Thats one that peeves me about a lot of manufacturers. They will gladly sell you a new motor but not brushes. I have found that if you take a sample into one of the big hardware chains you can usually get something to fit.Usually from grinders or saws etc. Make sure the wire pigtails are as thick as the old ones. If your lucky you may even find some with the right pigtail terminals. Because replacement brushes are usually from 110v devices you will find that to get thick enough pigtails that the carbon will usually be to large. just get some sandpaper and sand them down to size. Its a relatively easy job as the carbon is very soft but its messyBazza.

Well, I guess there are a lot of folks who would think a motor dead when it's just worn out brushes. Raritan offers great service and wonderful information through Vic, so this does surprise me. Brushes are a pretty cheap thing to keep in stock and take up virtually no space. When your Lectrasan goes down it is kind of a critical issue -- and brush replacement is a quick on-site fix. Well, relatively quick because you have to pull the whole unit apart to access the motor mount screws. These brushes are somewhat peculiar in that the pigtail comes off the side of the brush, not the rear -- making them hard to find through easy sources. I may just buy something oversize, sand to fit and stack it in with the old brush behind it. Not a great solution, but it will work. Thanks for trying Vic -- you're still a great guy and a wonderful resource!

I see that you are in SF. everything is available within that area you just need to search for motor rebuilders. they may be around the corner.
