Ok. The search feature here doesn't really function. I scrolled back a few pages and read stuff about electric heads, raw water intake vs. freshwater, etc.

One of the boats we are looking at has electric heads with raw water intake (i.e. water in the bowl comes from the body of water the boat is sitting in). This is very different than the boats I've had to date which have all been the modern vacu-flush heads with freshwater intake coming off the fresh water holding tank.

With our current vacu-flush and 40 gallon black water holding tank and our family of wife, me and the 2 little kids) can get by going out every weekend and not needing to pump out but maybe once every month or so, plus or minus a week.

1) How much more water will the typical electric head use per flush than a vacu-flush? Boat we are looking at has a 48-50 gallon holding tank. Will be having to pump out every weekend with the same amount of usuage just b/c it's got standard electric heads?

2) How prone to "issues" like clogging, malfunction, etc. are electric heads when compared to a modern vac-flush. I literally have never had an issue with any of the 2 cruisers I've had with vacu-flush. The heads on the boat we are looking at appear the same but no pedal for the vacu-flush. Instead there is a bulbous type switch mounted on the sidewall of the head that you push and it flushes.

3) We'll probably "always" be in freshwater, or at least, in freshwater 99% of the time. Obviously if luck goes good we'll be doing some trips to saltwater but let's assume most the time i am in freshwater (River system or inland lake). How big of an issue is the odor I read about that is possible with raw water intake heads due to organics, etc. getting caught inside the inner workings of the bowl, decaying, etc.?

4) I am guessing switching to vacuflush is a lot of $$, as would be converting to freshwater intake!

Thoughts? I've thought more about marine sanitation in the last 24 hours than I think I ever have.

1) From (my) memory of Vic's posts, you will use around double the water.

2) I know many people like the V-flush, but I have never had a problem w/ a "standard" head IF a) only the "right" things end up in it, and b) you do the annual service.

3) I think Vic has a cure, but I never had the issue w/ crud i the rim. I -have- had the inlet hose problem, but that is fixed by a) use it at least once a week, b) flush once when you first board, and get the odor over with... You will want to change the inlet hose about once every five years, more because it is attached to a thru-hull than permeation.

4) I'm guessing you are correct.

Use it, then decide. These systems work, and you might find that your fears are a non-issue. I've never had a desire for a V-flush on any of my boats; if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

using non potable lake water may produce algae and smells in the intake lines.

1)- probalby about twice the water usage... so you may have to pump out every other week end instead of once a month...

2)- impossible to answer, depends on the model of electric head you're looking at.

3)- no idea.. never had a raw water head used in fresh water!

4)- not sure... i'd guess $1500 in parts between the head and teh vac generator/pump... not worth it whatever head you get works fine.

The nice thing about VF is how simple they are. few moving parts, no maintenance except the duckbills and the ball valve seal every 5+ years.

I know some people with atlantes and they are very happy with them too...

bottom line is that i wouldn't make the type of head a consideration in picking a boat...

Thanks all for the quick replies. I appreciate the feedback. Nothing like a crash course in marine sanitation types.

True perhaps but I don't have a problem factoring it into purchase negotiations.... ;)

Stay tuned!

You will get odor using fresh water from the lake.

We installed 2 Atlantes FW heads two years ago and are very happy with them despite several "female hygienic" issues. Ours have the wall mounted control panel and it looks upscale. Before installing them I wase with the family on a boat with VF and the kids very much disliked the sucking sound of the VF.

David, the loud "pop" sound when the pedal is depressed on a VacuFlush has been known to "scare the crap" out of little kids (not literally, of course - just enough to make them start crying).
