Picking up a new to me boat this weekend any knowledge of the trip from Lewes Delaware to Barnegat Inlet via the outside would be appreciated. Please give constructive advise. Besides the obvious, the charts, multiple types of saftey gear and good planning.
Thanks for the help

on a new to you boat you cant have enough fuel filters and tools to replacethem

From Lewes DE, I would suggest you come accross the Delaware River and then inside through the Cape May Canal and then back outside the Cape May Inlet.

Going by the Little Egg Inlet area, just north of Atlantic City, you will want to go offshore a few extra miles....3-5....to get out past the shoals and breakers. Once north of LEI, you can come back closer to shore if you want/need.

Inside north of Atlantic City isn't too bad to the Barnegat area. There are a few shoaling areas in the ICW....particular low spots are between ICW 158 and ICW 162....again around the ICW 130A area and then the infamous ICW 117A area.

You could also come back inside at LEI. The breakers will look menacing, but the inlet traverse is actually well marked. Then north from there, you will only need to really be carefull around the ICW 117A area.

What size/type boat are you bringing up?

Good luck...

Thanks for the info.
Bruce I have that already taken care of.
Dominic I sold my Crownline and had purchased a Silverton 34c. The boat is offshore ready. But the local knowledge is what I need. I plan on coming in the Barnegat Inlet and then to Toms River. No other inlets unless forced in.The guy who is going with me fishes out of Barnegat all the time so he has the local knowledge.
I am using the Cape May Canal to avoid the additional ocean time.

Just a word of encouragement.....We rode in a head sea from Sayville, NY to Toms River on our 34C and she handled very well. Even changed our old salt's mind regarding the seaworthy-ness of Silverton's. Hope you have calmer seas!

Just one clarification on Dominic's clear advice... from Lewes you'll cross the Delaware Bay, not the Delaware River. I'm sure Dominic was just having a digital malfunction (his digits spelled River instead of Bay) ;) In nice weather and with a capable vessel its an easy (albeit mostly boring) trip.

So far, the marine forecast looks pretty good for Thursday to Saturday.

Good luck with the trip. On a maiden voyage, boring is good.

More like a(nother) senior moment.....good catch Mike.....

dominic, what w/b the purpose of going thru Cape May at all if you are going to go back out to the ocean? Shortest didtance between to points is a straight line.
If time permits go for a little R & R at A.C.; very good inlet.

Bob....it would only be 2 miles longer going thru the Cape May canal then heading straight out in to the open Ocean....However, the water outside the Delaware BAY gets mighty tumoltuous....especially with the wrong wind/tide combo....not to mention all the freight liners....as it is, just crossing the Bay can be on the hairy side. With a new to him boat, I'd figure going accross the bay, and then settling in for a little easy running, and maybe a refuel or lunch, before heading back out would be a nicer more enjoyable run....

i ran my new to me 34' Luhrs from oc,md to barnegat.i left at 6am dead flat seas about an hour later i was looking at 8-10' seas with some much bigger. i was 5m out set my gps for the buoy off barnegat inlet and hit the auto pilot at a comfortable angle to the stbd seas. when i was just south of Barnegat the winds and seas laid down as i prayed as this was my first time docking a 34' twin screw 16k lb boat. i arrived at my slip around 4pm. I would stay on the outside unless it was REAL bad, Little Egg inlet shoals go out about 2-3 miles and claimed a sailboat earlier this spring.

Hey Guys,
I was actually thinking the same thing about the canal after talking to somebody that keeps his boat in a marina in Cape May and he said stay out of the canal its just slow going and really not worth it. Then thinking some more I would rather be on the outside figure the handling of the boat in open area than deal with the traffic and bridges with a new to me boat. I will have plenty of time to figure maneuverability out after getting through Barney and heading up to Toms River. However stopping to get gas and lunch sounds good, but I think it may be a little to early for that. I plan on leaving rb2@gr5t 5am Sunday.
Just my thoughts though.
Keep up the great comments

I will be on my boat from tomorrow on and can see the Barnegat Light House from my dock.
If you want an escort, give me 3 hours notice and I will meet you outside the inlet.

I'm currently on my boat in Little Egg Harbor north of Atlantic City if you need to come in call me on the boats main number. I'll come out and get you inside to the ICW safely. The boats main number is 609-350-2804 ask for Bill. When passing Little Egg (just north of Absecon/Atlantic City) make sure you are at least 3 miles off shore. We have a nasty shoal that runs up to 3 miles out of the inlet on the North side.

Trip went well, it took us 6.5 hrs not using the canal. We left the dock rb2@gr5t 7am on Sunday and we were in Barnegat Inlet rb2@gr5t 1pm and rb2@gr5t my dock in Toms River rb2@gr5t 2:30pm. The seas got a little snotty in A.C. but smoothed out a little bit as I headed 5 miles out and came back in to avoid the Brigatine shoaling that I was warned about. Was not chancing that, headed in towards Barnegat got on the inside it started raining but not bad. According to everybody the rain was really bad on land. We stayed 2 miles off shore the rest of the trip. Made it to my slip in the first shot.(not bad for my first time driving a twin inboard) I burned about 130 gallons of gas and traveled rb2@gr5t about 18 mph.
The only complaint I had is, I wish the weather was better. I would have liked to see more while traveling.
Thanks for the Help
