This will be my first trip East of Westhampton and I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips or things to watch out for on my journey. I will be going Saturday August 13th and traveling the inside through shinnecock canal and out into peconic bay. Thanks

Only issue used to be Moriches. If you made it to Westhampton then you have nothing to worry about. The locks are pretty straight fwd. ( just dont tie off. Loop over the cleat and hold fast. ) The peconic is cake. Vast well marked water with nothing to worry about. So not like the sand box ur coming from. Ull enjoy it . Only thing to even mention is the shelter island ferrys. They run 2 at a time . One north and one south. Just keep an eye and all will be great. Enjoy the trip.

Agree with Rob but if locks are flowing like a rapid river and the gates are open, then make sure you power up. They only flow south and the good news is the rapids will stop. So two choices, go thru with as much power as you need to keep boat straight or wait for the tides to change. Sounds scary and it is. We did it once and I can tell you there was a whirlpool just south of the lock! But again, either wait it out or go through with power. You can always call lockmaster to find out what the tides and gates are doing. Best and easiest time to go through is when gates are open and tide is slack or peconic is a little higher than bay.

Well that is a matter of opinion, but when your running across the bay, you will see boats cutting towards the bridge as well as fishing boat sitting in what is the channel. The bridge will be on your right and you will feel like you should turn and you can if you stay on plane. But if you want to follow the channel you need to make like the bottom of a letter "Z" and stay straight in the channel towards the buoy by the land. You will feel like your gonna run up on the land, then make a sharp cut back almost SW to head up towards bridge. Fishing boats may be blocking alot of these buoys.
So when you pass red 10 on starboard, hold that course until you pass red 12, then cut up to green 13. You will lots of boats cutting this corner.

Yes, its well marked...you just need to know to look for it. My 1st time thru on the way back and was on plane and didn't locate the can (red). Cut the corner and ran over the bar/flat. Like I said, once...

Made it to greenport without any problems. Went through shinnecock canal with the locks open which was an experience. I tried to do it at 5 mph but at one point I felt the boat start to go sideways and backwards so I throttled up and went through that way. Tuesday I'm off to treasure cove in riverhead for two nights and then I'm finishing up my week at west hampton. Is getting up into treasure cove well marked?
Once you clear the marinas on the south side (Spellmans) of the canal you should definitely power up to keep control and forward direction when the locks are open and the current flowing. Same goes for heading south...stay on your power until you get to the marinas and then slow down. Locking thru is pretty easy. Just be careful if you are the first boat closest to either gate as the pump surge is pretty strong and you can get blown off the wall if you are just hanging on...ahem...did that too...once
When approaching riverhead from the east just south of jamesport would u keep the red 4 on your starboard side of the boat then cut up to green 5 and 7 and keep them to port then down red 8 and keep that to starboard and then up to green 9 keeping that to port and then on to red 2 which is the entrance of the peconic canal itself which looks like it's marked all red with no greens and keep those all to starboard as well. Just want to be sure. weather is bad enough I don't need running aground to be part of my vacation as well.
