Looking for a FI recommendation

I've got some vacation time coming up and the wife and I want to take the boat over to fire island and spend a few days. I'm looking for a good recommendation. I was thinking mid week at watch hill. My wife would prefer being near a town with some restaurants.
Recommendations?
 
Considering that you're going to spend a few days Watch Hill just might do. They have the pier restaurant which I think is open Thursday through Sunday. Davis Park, to the West, is only a 1 mile walk or a short dinghy ride. They have The Casino Restaurant which is open all week long. I also think it's the only restaurant with an ocean view on all of Fire Island. I've had meals at both locations and give a bit of an edge to The Casino only because they have a wider variety of options on the menu, but they both deliver a good meal.

If your wife is looking for a town feel Ocean Beach is a great choice too. Lots of stores and restaurants but limited availability of slips which I hear are very pricey.

Ocean Beach does have more to offer with respect to restauants and shops but they do not allow you to stay on the the boat overnight. You can try for a slip at the town to the east called Seaview they allow transients and you do not need to be a resident but a bit pricey. Another option would be Sailors Haven, from there you are a short Water Taxi or dink ride to Ocean Beach, I have also been told of folks who walk the beach to Cherry Grove.

Mid week you can get into Atlantique and ocean beach is 3/4 mile walk on beach or sand road.
Nice walk.

Can also do Kismet but no power there.
 
Thanks for the feedback, I'm still leaning towards Watch Hill. Is there a specific dock I should ask for that is more hospitable than others (i.e. less mosquitoes)
 
Keep away from "A" dock, your to small for "d" dock, but can do D basin. The dock behind the bar is nice also as well as the dock along the restaurant pier. "A" dock is mosquito heaven :)
 
Try to dock on the 1 of the piers. Seems to us have less mosquitos.
 
OK ... change of mind. The Admiral would rather go to Atlantique since Ocean Beach is close by.
Can anyone give me the the insiders scoop on Atlantique?
 
Need to be a town of islip resident but if marina is not crowded they will waive that for you.
Midweek is never a issue but weekends can be.
Rate is higher for residents.
There are 3 slip sizes.
A, b and c.
I think you will fit in a c.
I don't recall the sizes.
They charge by the letter so a is more than c.
Run there is easy. Take north channel to west channel.
Hang left at mid channel buoy and follow that south channel around.

2 basins to dock in.
On left is a nice small basin that is nice if you can fit.
Larger basin dock based on the wind.
If south then anywhere.
North you will rock and roll.
East go to east wall.
West go to west wall.
 
Thanks to all the feedback. We just spent Tues-Fri at Atlantique. We ended up on C dock but it was really tight.
 
Don't want to hijack this thread but.....

Does anyone know if you can get into the campground at Cedar Beach AFTER Labor Day without a residence permit sticker ? We plan to be on the Island for 4 weeks with the coach starting L/D weekend and would love to go check it out. We have reservations for other c/g's but would add a week if we could get in.

I'd even be happy with a spot in the " parking lot "......I can go 4-5 days with no hookups or electric.

Last resort we can see if AYC will let you park and tap in.
They allow transient boats now. Not sure about rv.

Just this year. They are trying to get extra income from empty slips. So if there is a empty slip they may let you tap into the 30 amp service. We have one across from us on c dock where you can park longways to dock and not mess anyone up with view. Can always ask.
 
OK.....but aren't the empty slips privately owned ?? Who gets the revenue ??
 
Finally got to talk to someone in the TOB park rec.dept. Told them I'm an out of state resident. Asked if I could get into the Cedar Beach campground after Labor Day....NO. How about if I paid a non resident fee.....NO. Can I park in the parking lot and not use any amenities.....NO. I have a Suffolk Co. green card...will that get me in .......NO. I have a AARP card will that help me .......NO. :) Like I thought Long Island is still the land of .....NO

I remember going to the Marina after Labor day when I was a TOB resident and the C/G would be empty. Why would the not want the extra revenue ? I guess its just easier to raise taxes.
