Hi All, we are considering moving to a new boat. We have narrowed the options down to a handful of boats, and will begin looking at them in person as scheduling allows. ideally i would like to make a purchase either this fall or next spring. so I'm looking for any feedback that you may have about the boats themselves. the Very short list is Maxum 4600 SBC Versus SeaRay 480 Sedan Bridge. obviously the Maxum is much more cost effective, but does that relate to a lower quality boat?
I'm really looking for feedback from anyone with direct knowledge of the Maxum that can offer some feedback on how you feel about the boat's quality, issues you have, and what kind of boating you do with it..
We will be looking to run the boat from NY to FL in the future, and from FL to the Bahamas regularly. any feedback you have would be appreciated. Regards, Keith..

Back in 99 I bought a new Maxum 3700 which along with the 4100 and 4600 was part of Maxum called the Sport Yacht line. I kept it for 5 trouble free years

While shopping I looked at a few others including The 37 or 38 Sundancer SeaRay. Reason I picked the Maxum was despite being cheaper, in 99 Maxum used better materials incl corian counter tops, SS thru hull discharge instead of plastic and few more things. The most important thing was access to systems. The Maxum was a pleasure to work on with great access especially to the generator. On the SR, I could barely reach the generator or other maintenance items

Kept the boat for about 5 years and i never had to call the dealer for any warranty issue. Boat was solid, never had a hatch or window leaking... around 2000 during a TS the bow rail ended up caught on top of a piling and bent upward. The stanchion base and welds held solid, not even a stress crack on deck

Now this is about the smaller 3700 but the 4600 was build to the same standards. In the following few years, Sea ray caught up on interior materials although not on maintenance access. Eventually Brunswick discontinued the larger Maxums as they were too close to Sea Ray in quality and close to Bayliners in price

Thanks Pascal,
I looked at one of these this past Saturday, it appears to be a well put together boat. I appreciate your thoughts on the brand and quality compared to SR.

I have heard nothing but good about both boats from their owners.

A couple of observations:

The SR 48 Sedan is a couple of feet longer, a foot wider, 10K heavier, Deeper V and about $100-200K+ more. They’re all over the Island/country
Most came with CAT 3196’s or Cummins QSM 11’s. Most of the CAT’s had major issues so they need to be really looked at to confirm all updates and Maintenance has been done- BTW- I had 3196’s in my last boat that were new replacements as the first set committed suicide. That being said I loved them. The Cummins are the engine of choice but seem to have a higher resale value.

The Maxum 4600 SCB , Again I have only heard good from anyone that’s has had or worked on them. So, a little smaller, Lighter and flatter V, A sea trail will tell how good of a ride it has. Not as many to choose from. Most often comes with Cummins 450C’s- As close to ‘Bullet Proof’ as you can get. Sip’s fuel in comparison to the Bigger block engines in the SR 48.
It looks like your coming from an express so really check out the bridge seating etc and see which feel more right for you

I believe the 48 had a cored deck and some sections hull as well....

48 was a great boat. Great riding , tons storage … truly great boat..

Thank you for the replies. Yes currently we have a 2001 310 SeaRay Sundancer. love the boat, but were always looking for more space. we use the boat a lot considering we currently live in NY. we have decided to put our 310 on the market, and see what happens. The more time we spend talking about it, the more it looks like the Maxum is the right boat for us.

I have friends with a 4600 who bought it from other friends of ours which alone says something as a lot of people wouldn't dare sell a boat to a friend. They all seem to really like it and if you have any specific questions I will do my best to get them answered.
