Looking for kid friendly destinations on the Sound

I am looking for kid (toddler) friendly destination along the LI Sound. We keep our boat on the Hudson River at Haverstraw. Can someone recommend good kid friendly places to go?

We have been to:
Star Island Yacht Club - Good but not for kids
Britannia (Northport) - Good but not for kids
Capri (Port Washington) - Good but not for kids
Newport RI - Good but not for kids
Champlins (Block) - Good for kids

Any other recommendations on places? Restaurants - things to do?
 
Montauk Yacht club is much more kid friendly than Star Island.

Essex Island Marina, Mystic Seaport, Norwalk, Treasure Cove, or just about any marina with a pool.
 
Rob..........My kids are all grown....graduated and gone... ( thats why I'm so happy )

Except for our dog......we boat kidless. Sorry I can't help you on this.
 
Mystic is Great for kids, a quick cab to the old seaport museum or to the aquarium. Actually getting a cab can be an issue sometimes, be prepared to walk. Port Jefferson is nice. Lots of little shops-- a puppy store, ice cream, slot car racing etc. My kids absolutely love Essex island, though there is precious little going on in town for kids, the marina is nice. Norwalk is good, there are things to do in walking distance --Aquarium with lots of hands on exhibits, IMAX, a children's museum, light house tour.

How long are you staying? Day trips are easy, though spending a weekend in some of these locations could become boring for a little one.
 
Mystic is good. Norwalk has an Aquarium. Montauk Yacht Club is better than Star I for kids.

When mine were younger, a pool was THE requirement.
 
Where there is a pool, you will find kids, and other parents with those kids.

Great way to meet new people.
 
Essex, Treasure cove ( has aquarium right next door )

all come to mind as great kid spots

Hmm - Maybe I can work on this trip - Leave Haverstraw go to Treasure Cove, Block Island, Montauk (Go Fishing in the shark tournament on friends boat) and home. Hmm

I agree with what's been said, but, will add a few comments.

I don't know how long your planning to stay at Treasure Cove, but, it is NOT on the way to Block, you'll be adding 50 plus miles round trip(in and out of peconic bay) and Haverstraw to treasure cove is a pretty long leg.

If you want an aquarium stopping in mystic would be more continent and the aquarium is way better. Although will require a cab ride.

No one mentioned Greenport, I find it to be a good kid place, I like townsend, it's small with the pool close to the slips and you can walk to town. Lots of places to eat, a carousel for the kids, movies. There is also a new town marina that would be great for a one night stay.

Like others said Montauk yacht club is much better then star for kids, two outdoor pools and one indoor. Also, a little known service is "kids camp" that they watch your kids for free (tips are always nice) for a couple of hours. I don't know what age they start at, but not in diapers. They do crafts, watch movies and go to the play ground.

Boating Rob,

In the same amount of time to get to Montauk you could visit many places on the south shore as well. Fire Island has many marinas along the way.
 
FO FO on the south shore.... cant compare to northshore and Conn locations ....

Garys right ... thats a haul u got for the first leg. But hell we go from merrick to kingston in one shot.. so just pic ur travel days .... The sound is always 1 to 2's so thats a non issue..

OK - Maybe not Treasure Cove this year. Where else would be good on the way to Block? I dont want to go to Newport.
 
Essex - pool, train ride, good food
Norwalk - aquarium, good food
Mystic - pool (depending where you stay), aquarium, seaport, good food
Montauk Yacht Club - Pools, kid stuff
Greenport - pool, good food, carousel

We have tried many places to break up the trip to Block. With the kids, a pool was key but if that's all there is, you can almost go anywhere. We did Mystic as a stand-alone trip last year. Without kids, it was ok but not somewhere we would go back to. Unless you stay at the Seaport museum, you need to take a cab to get to places but there is no pool there.

If it were me (with small kids), it would be Mystic, Montauk Yacht Club or Greenport-Townsends.

Lastly, the Sound is a very large body of water and a strong wind coming from the west or east that is opposed to the tide makes very nasty, ocean-like conditions. Since there is no place to hide from those directions, you don't want to get your brains beat in (or listen to the Admiral and kids) for 4 hours. You need to watch the weather like going anywhere else.

I have never hit snot in the sound. If the sound is whipped to a frenzy then u know that anywhere else must be hurricane and u shouldnt have been out to begin with. IMHO....

If anything boating in the sound is deceiving as when u get into any other body of water in the same conditions its usually a mess...

Rob, you must not get to the sound too often, it can get real NASTY!!!

Mattituck is another stop on the way to Block. Matt-a-Mar has a pool and a kids playground.

No question that if it is bad on the Sound, it is also really bad elsewhere. I was just pointing out that it is not alway 1-2 footers. Wind whipping down 100+ miles of deep water can produce some nasty conditions and my point is that while it may be a steep chop on the rivers or the harbor, the right wind can make the Sound much worse.

Last year, a friend in a 40'Riviera left Milford CT for Glen Cove and turned around to come back.

For the most part, it is a great place to boat. Like anywhere else, just heed the forecast and avoid an unpleasant trip.
 
See that I stand corrected... Only time i ever heard of the sound being lathered up was like in retarded winds... Im apologize for my misinformation and will prepare for my tazing !!!!

How is old Saybrook for kids?

Trying to plan the summer trip. Leave Haverstraw on a Saturday and head somewhere between there and Block. Go to Block from Monday and leave on Thursday and head to Montauk to meet up with friend for the fishing tournament.
 
We stayed at the Saybrook Point Marina/Resort a few years ago. Clean place. They have outdoor and indoor pools but I can't think of much else good for little ones. Also, if they put you on the outside, stern to the river, it did not have floating docks so getting on and off with a small child will be a PIA.
