Looking for some input on this route.

I am hopefully closing on a 33' Cruisers and would like to bring it from Northeast, MD to Stony Point, NY by water. Looking at Googlearth, it is about 300 miles to take the route below. I'm in the process of getting updated charts and I will have GPS as well, but looking for more local knowledge along the route. If you have any input or points of interest it would be great to hear about them. I have just under a 12' beam and with the inboards, draft is 3'.

1) Head south and loop around the tip of Elk Neck park.
2) Head up and into the C & D Canal across to the Delaware bay
3) Head SE in the bay and loop around Cape May, NJ
4) Head north along the NJ coastline staying within a mile of the coast
5) Head straight up into the Hudson and into the marina
Also any recommended marina's to crash in north of Cape May? Maybe something close to a good restaurant and bar.

Thanks,
MJK

Sounds like a fun trip. Pascal and others have done the route quite a few times and I'm sure they'll offer you some good advise with your planning.

Good luck.

You have to stop in A.C. for the restaurants alone if not for entertainment & gambling. Hope someone else will chime in on this but I'd stay at least 2-3 miles off shore if I were running this route. Also heard recently that one must run ~ 8 miles off shore past Little Egg Inlet. I hope I have my inlets straight. I'm sure a local will correct me if I'm wrong.

i usually do that run (from annapolis) in 2 days, stopping in Cape May. The only concern is the weather, teh lower delaware can be very unpleasant at time and there is really nowhere to stop along the way (at least with a larger boat).

In cape may, try Utsch, there are restaurants nearby. there is also a marina a couple of miles north of the inlet, along the ICW, i forgot the name.. someone mentioend it here recently... never been there though, but i think it has a pool, etc...

Atlantic city has never appealed to me so i've never stopped there.

obviously along the Jersey coast you want to pick the right weather, usually leaving early in the morning works best as winds are often lighter. get info on the various inlet so you know what to expect if you have to get in.

i usually run a couple of miles off shore, i dont' know why you'd want to be 8 miles off Little Egg... the shoals only extend under 2 miles.

I questioned that distance as well. They were very emphatic re 7-8 miles off shore. I just have to confirm inlet in question. Should know tonite or tomorrow. Will post at that time.

"I heard" vs checking the chart... no brainer, I trust the chart! nothing that prevetns you from being as close as 2 miles, comfortably. brigantine shoal extends about 1 1/2 mile.

This is great info. I'm planning on going over the charts with a fine tooth comb this week. These are some areas to check out.

We have never had to go around Cape May. Shoot for the canal, just watch if one of the ferries is coming out. Good depth, and I run pretty much the center of the canal. Only 2 mi. off shore.. Have a fun safe trip.

I boat Little Egg, Brigantine is South of our inlet, Little Egg has shoaling that extends 1.5 miles out I ran it yesterday. We usually lose a couple of boats a year following the 1 mile offshore route. 2 miles and you will be fine just pay attention to where you are because there are barrier (uninhabited) islands and that is the real shoreline. If you get in trouble here you can call SeaTow or US Boats and they will help you. No disrespect but for information USCG Atlantic City or Delaware Bay as they also call themselves will not give you much help unless their is a medical emergency. I have listened time and time again to AC USCG and believe me it will take them 15 minutes after they collect all your information before they will come back and tell you they don't give directions (liability). This is the world we live in. Also USCG AC is also a training center for dispatchers so its a crap shot as to the quality of the dispatcher. You could always hail me and I could help if needed (Wireless One) we monitor channels 16, 22 & 9. Good luck and have a safe trip you will be fine using the 2 mile rule and as Pascal said get the most up to date charts you can.

2 Miles off it is. This is great info. I really apreciate the help. Survey is Tuesday. If all goes well, maybe next weekend, if not the following.

MJK,
I am planning a trip up to NYC and LI leaving on the 18th of July. I live near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and heading thru the Cape May canal up to AC the first day. Staying at the state marina next to the Trump Marina and Hotel for 2 days, then Liberty Landing Marina for 3 days then out to Northort for 2 days and then head home. Let me know where you are staying maybe we can have drinks or dinner?

I would definately not go around Cape May. The canal is much easier and breaks up the ride a little. We are staying Schooner Island Marina which is near the ocean side of the canal in North Wildwood, it has a pool and restaurant and is fairly close to the beach. That will be on our return.
