I go there once or twice a year and avoid the big weekends, but from my experience their clients are NOT "young" adults. There are far more 60 year olds than 21 year olds. I would say the median age would be somewhere in the 30's and if you averaged the age it would be somewhere in the 40's

I'm poking a little fun on this issue but I do think Lost Isle deserves it's place in the Delta. ;)

I think that they want the Sheriff's docks on Lost Isle rather than across the slough. With the limited dockage already, it would be hard to justify another dock, plus the additional salaries.

It's too bad that civilization has creeped into our old Delta haunts. I don't really think we need it.

More than likely they'll build a new one at the next hot spot in The Delta which will fill the vacuum that Lost Isle leaves. Windmill Cove anyone?

They may want to re-think that strategy with Lost Isle out of the picture. I don't see as much upside in an upscale place on The Delta when there is a much bigger void that can be filled resulting in much higher returns.

I am one of those "old timers" that you refer to. I too miss the "old" Lost Isle.

I lost track if Bill still holds the paper, since there have been so many "owners" of L-I over the years.

All I know is that once the cooler weather kicks in, the weekend party crowds go into hibernation. To try and concentrate on just that crowd is financial suicide. Back when families could enjoy the place, it was a year-round business.

The short-sighted business plan of attracting the testosterone and silicone crowd might have spurred a little surge in business, but for the long-term viability of the place, it was a huge mistake.

And not controlling the riff-raff and public sex acts resulted in the coffin being nailed shut. And rightfully so.

I don't want to see a historical part of the Delta close down as much as the next guy, but in its current form, I would rather see the place shuttered for a few years and hope that some new blood and a game-plan will find its way there.

Some dredging of the marina and a thorough cleaning up of the place as well as some repairs to their docks might help with their image a little more than a fancy event...

I think they did just that. I'll have to check it out, but from what I've heard, they've done a lot to the place.

Browns Island is across New York Slough from the Pittsburg waterfront. Not far from the Pittsburg YC.

Hal Schell wrote that the brothel was run by a madam named Flora Woods. Jack London was said to be a regular there. It was called the Coney Island Club at the time. A few fruit and palm trees were said to mark the spot.

You can still see a lone palm tree at the location.

Schell also wrote that a second brothel was rumored to be on the river side of the same island. It was operated by Hazel Price from some vessels that were rafted up and anchored there.

I too, fell in love with the place some 30 years ago. I used to love to go there during the week, and stay a few days. I spent every free time I had there. It was quite a fun, safe place to be.

It has changed much, and I have been there only a couple of times in the last 15 years.

It used to be a larger boat stop in, but seems to have changed to more of a ski boat stop, from what I have seen.

But I agree, it is a Delta icon of legendary status, and should be allowed to stay open. And not be hassled by changing building codes, requirements or political crap...
 
There is a solution to the Lost Isle bad behaviour problem. It takes one guy to do it. You only allow boats to dock if they have a woman on board. Back in the days when Curt Page had the Exxon Valdez, he had a simple rule about partying on the boat. Everyone was welcome. Tall, short, rich or poor, etc. The only thing you had to have to get on the Valdez was a woman. Of course, that kept me off. But the argumemt that exposed breasts leads to fights is with merit. Parallels can be drawn. Bob Dylan once sung "I started out on burgandy, but soon hit the harder stuff". Every herion addict started out on milk. Fighting and herion addiction... breasts and milk... I can connect those dots... But still, no men unescorted by a woman rule would do the trick for Lost Isle.

Fluterby... can I buy a drink at Lost Isle sometime. I promise to behave.

To bad it couldn't work. The problem is it would be discriminatory.
 
OK, so now the steroid and silicon crowd will be setting up camp at places like bikini beach where there is no control whatsoever. While Lost Isle was a rowdy place, at least it was contained and there was some control in place for those who got out of hand.

Since there is only so much room at bikini beach, other similar spots will pop up throughout The Delta. Sheriffs Departments will have their hands full.
 
Hmmmm.....bikini beach, would that be north or south of Rio Vista? I would ask the exact location but that might make me appear to be a dirty old man. However, the fishing could be good there...who knows

It seems for Memorial Day Weekend, the Lost Isle crowd was at Tower Park. BUT, everyone was well behaved while I was there. Maybe as the sun set, they got rowdy.....after the booze had gotten over consumed!
