This thread began as the "Pickle Bill's Restaurant" thread, but I have edited it to reflect the direction it has since taken:

A discussion about MacRay Harbor in Lake St. Clair.

too bad we missed you. hardly at my marina at mentor harbor but only 5 miles from pickel bills.

i enjoy it alot, take the dinghy over there from mentor and fun to tie up and eat. place across the street is good too.

i had a great time inthe 1000 islands .... what a place to boat. holy cow.

John, I was aiming for MHYC, but just couldn't take it anymore, so we ducked into Fairport instead.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed the trip. We had a great time on Toronto. I wish we had been able to go further, but one of the best things about this trip was the leisurely pace. We had a few days of rain and bad water, so it was nice to not feel pressured by a schedule.

If I remember correctly, you had someone take your boat up, then your brought it back home? Did it all work out ok?

worked out fine. the guy who brought it up really did a nice job and he also had a nice time with it. he even went up to the 1000 islands and spent a few days.
i arrived at the boat at oswego and it could not have looked better. i was in peanut heaven and then when we took off to sackets harbor, i noticed the hour meters and he put 30 on them. holy cow i said. thank heavens i considered this r&r for the employees and let the company pay for that picnic.

my trip up there was great. just didnt venture off the beaten paths too much, the canandian side from brock to ganon was fantastic. wished i would have visited some state parks and anchored out some.

got it back to oswego and then a little blimp happened. the return driver asked a couple to join him and the husbands brother in law took a serious turn for the worse health wise. first it was cnx, then wait, and then they decided to rush back thru thu the welland. this guy is ok with the boat but i felt better with him in the erie than the well. anyway, the rub rail just above the port exhaust was kissed all so very ugly. only bad thing that happened. he made it back in 3 days, perfect wx on ont and medium chop buf to erie and then settled out.

1000 islands marina has got this 04 tiara 52 sovran that i need some minor donations for and i'll be a happy c.

glad T was good 4u. enjoy the summer. i got some army business in detroit in mid aug and the sales vp and govt vp convinced me we got to go, and rtb via pib. maybe my wife and i to vermillion/kellys and then port stanley for the finish. any addtl trips ???

Sounds like a good trip. Have any pictures?

Sorry to hear about your rub rail. Lemme guess: locks 4-5-6? They're vicious. We've seen 2 separate incidents there. The first one was almost violent - a poor guy in an Ocean didn't get to the wall on time, so the turbulence did it for him. His fwd rail hit so hard that we all heard the FB crack. It put a damper on the rest of our transit, and we didn't even know the guy.

When we got to the top of Lock 4 this time, the Lockmaster said, "hey, that sailboat is struggling in the turbulence, so I'm going to put you guys in his spot and let him go up front where it's safer. You guys with those bow thrusters can handle anything".

We pointed at our friend on the bow and yelled "HE'S OUR BOW THRUSTER!" He just smiled and shrugged. We did handle the rough spot ok, even without a thruster. Ironically, before Lock 5 even began to fill, the sailboat guys lost control and hit the wall going backwards at a 45 degree angle. It didn't make the kind of sound the guy did with the Ocean, but those sharp-angled transom corners just aren't meant to battle concrete walls.

Detroit, eh? I'm on the VP's side - go for it. Anytime you can choose a SeaRay over the turnpike... Do you have a marina in mind? Let me know if you're looking for any input. If you need to stay close to downtown, I could help you work your way into the Detroit Yacht Club. If you've never been there, it'll probably remind you a lot of MHYC, with a very similar look and feel. At least, the buildings and grounds.

If your bus. is near the northern burbs, consider MacRay Harbor. (our winter home-port) The transient docks can be a little "quiet" - but the amenities and service are top-notch. It's almost surreal - it's a marina with almost 500 boats, and everyone is happy and loyal. It's a private marina that's run and taken care of like yacht clubs SHOULD BE.

I'm also familiar with just about every other dockage option in the area, so again, just let me know.

slw--took wed and thurs off and decided to go to vermilion and then on to kellys. verm was super. tied up at vyc and had a great time walking the beach and then taxied on over to chez f and the food was super.

went over to kellys the next day and couldnt find portside on the book so called unique for a day dock. fu fu on that place. didnt realize marine max had their get together aqua at seaway . walked over to look at what was there --1000 on thursday and not much there other than a 51 and a 48my.

liked looking at the glacier groove and that was about it. the cart we rented from unique was worthless. we took off around 1 and spent the night at our marina and then went home on friday. loved both on the way out and back to shut em down in the middle of somewhere and take the cool off dip. btw, do u run with ur gen on? i don't.

on the welland, he dinged it waiting to go in on the ontario side. said we was on a wall had to wait 2h with another boat and then got all excited and rubbed it out.

our business is with tacom. last time we went to selfridge and i tied up at some covered marina on the clinton. noticed a huge marina right next to selfridge. loved going on lake st c but next time will stay on the detroit river and let the guys take a taxi. first time we went we stayed at gregory boat works. walked over to the next marina up past the waterworks and enjoyed a nice lunch there.

there is a lazzara dealer near all this and think we are going in a couple of weeks and will go to where he has his 68 and check that out. that is some sweet boat.

how is ur boat running? having a lot of fun buying diesel.

Boy I hope that Kelleys Island Aquapolooza produces a buyer for my boat. I have it brokered with Marine Max. It is still at Bay Point for the summer.

matt--does MM take their brokered boats to aqua? i was there early thursday and it looked like couples rafting up for the weekend

No they don't but the people that attend the aquas talk to the MM people about moving up to larger boats. And I am hoping someone would want a 300 Weekender (1987)

Chez Francois is quite a place! We haven’t been in 2 years, but we can actually stern-in right on their docks, so we don’t have much excuse.

Portside is good about monitoring the radio, but that place is so TIGHT – they built the whole marina with 30 ft boats in mind. It’s frustrating. We’ve squeezed into slips there, but then you spend the day waiting for someone to smash into the bow. We only go there if there’s room on the inside of the crib.

I try to run the genny regularly, but she can’t handle running without a load, so I have to watch it carefully unless it’s really hot and the cabin is closed up w/ the A/C on. Otherwise, with a DC fridge, there’s usually not much need for the genny when we’re cruising, so the genny has half the hours as the mains.

The big marina next to Selfridge IS MacRay Harbor. The next time you’re in that neighborhood, call Carrie. She’ll make you feel like a part of her 1,000-member family.

If you need to stay close to the city, I think you’d enjoy the surroundings more at Harbor Hill or DYC, or even Grosse Pointe YC. You might be able to leverage a free night or reduced rate at the YC’s using MHYC’s ILYA affiliation…?

Ok, if you pick up that little 68, *I* want to get on the list of people who move your boat around the Great Lakes for you! Our broker snuck us under the ropes at Colony’s winter open-house and walked us through it. All I can say is, wowwww. (although I’m partial to the 75 LSX)

Macray--that was it. my dad's last air force assignment was Selfridge and sure brought memories to go walking around there. liked the trip, but future trips will be to as close as i can get to 11 mile drive to min the taxi fare. i stay with the boat and let the sales guys have at it. they are done around 3 or 4 and then we crank up and go to PIB for the night. up at o'dark thirty and then get to mhyc and back to pitt around noon.

who doesnt like the 75??!!rb2@gr5t#rb2@gr5t!, but i would never buy a new boat and it seems it's going to be awhile b4 those hit the used market. my next boat will be one that has one of the 3D's involved.......divorce, death, or debt.

lazz's right now are bean dreams for me. now, tiaras, you know much about them? after owning this 45, here's a few things my next boat gots to have..

1. no canvas or isenglass.
2. a very much aligned sofa/couch to watch the tv. the tv in my boat is not well placed for viewing.
3. 2 full bedrooms
4. i love my cockpit though with the camper back as that is the place the admiral has deemed as totally acceptable to her and her early morning writings.

anyway, this tiara sovran.... love the no isenglass, nice enclosed helm.cockpit.salon area. the downstairs though seems a little disjointed to me with those 2 sitting areas. do you know any of the ins and outs with these tiaras? know 06 was the last year and that new 58--wow--wonder how the SR forum guys would compare taht boat to the 55 dancer? my mind, tiara wins hands down....

might go to the cedar point, in water--do many take their boats there ? might try to go early and then over to cf at vermil for the night.

Well John, I hear your desire for a short taxi ride, but I still recommend MacRay over any marina in the “Nautical Mile” of St. Clair Shores. I have to admit that The Mile’s 9 Mile Rd. to 10 Mile Rd. stretch is as geographically convenient as you’ll get and there are dozens of marina options…

1. No canvas or isen – that’s a tall order! I’m also a Tiara fan, but sometimes more from a distance… I appreciate the obvious quality and smart (lasting) styling, but I agree that many of their models have “cut up” layouts. There’s a 52 for sale up there. They winter store at MacRay. It’s not kept to my standards of cleanliness, but as long as he’s maintained the mechanicals, all she needs is some soap and wax. It’s the “open” plan, but the glass windshield meets half your criteria. It’s the only ’01 52 listed in the area if you’re interested.

2. lol yeah – SeaRay isn’t exempt from some of the “what were they thinking” design issues. (tv placement etc) Have you ever noticed that they kept the same them in the 460DA? They put the best seat at a 90 degree angle to the TV and didn’t correct it until the 460 was nearly at its end-of-run.

3. & 4. Staterooms and a big covered aft area… you’re not at risk of going to the dark side, are you? (aft-cabin)

Yeah, I like the Cedar Point Boat Show. Miami and Ft Laud have nothing to worry about, but it’s a good way to spend some time on a Sept. wkd. Sima Marine has two interesting vessels that will be at the show: a re-fitted 1990 Viking MY and a ’96 Cummins-powered 450DA. I’ve been offering to transport the 450 for them, but so far they haven’t bitten. (I want to see how she runs – it’s the only one of that vintage that I’ve ever seen w/ Cummins, but they swear it wasn’t a re-power)

i know the 96 450 da real well. it was my dockmate at mhyc--Plastic Persuasion. He had it for a year and traded it on an 04 carver 46 this spring. plastic female surgeon had it b4 him. not repowered.

there are 2 tiaras in 1000 islands. like the boat and sovran aspect but cant stand the bottom layout, those 2 dinette arrangements are not to my likin, but again, the upstairs salon is sweet. lakeside has an 06 and said he would sell it and agree to a 93% trade in on a new 58 w/i 18 months. fyi, the 58 will be at lakeside on 8sep.

next, i called the guy on that 03 68 sea ray in your neck of the woods, still under cover. sounded good and i called the sea ray dude who sold me my 45. he is not a big fan of the 68 and came up with his theory as to why it is worth only 1.1 and why should get a sunseeker, viking or his listed hatt 02 63 hatt rph. know anything of those darkside hatts and the rph? anohter darkside visit to the was on the agenda next when he started on an 04 59 marquis sold in 06 not titled>>>??????, but could be had for 8xx. hmmmm ---can see me getting that an explaining to my new dockmate, Sima as to what just happened. sima and i have talked for over a year about his 04.*same situatuion but he wants 1.1+

we might boat up next week and will let you , maybe we can hook up for lunch.

I'm constantly surprised at how small the boating community is. (450 was your neighbor!?)

I always liked the 680, but I guess I'm not surprised that they don't hold their value. Still, I'd choose the 680 over most of the Princess-Vikings and all of the Seekers. I didn't know there were any examples in the area. The only freshwater 680 I've seen was in Lake Michigan.

Re: the Hatteras 6300 RPH... that's NOT the darkside!!! Now you're really talking. Seriously, it's my #1, all-time favorite boat. Since the day I first saw it. I like it better than the 6400 that replaced it.

If money were no object (and of course, it IS), I'd STILL want a 63 - even over the LSX or any other crazy thing out there. The 6300 RPH kicked up a bunch of controversy from Hatteras' conservative customers, but I think it's lines are classic and perfectly proportioned. Like a Tiara, the interior is durable, but unlike Tiara, it's bright and comfortable. The galley is big and well positioned but not right in the middle of the salon... I'll stop - I could go on all night. I just love that boat. Big enough to have everything you need, small enough to get into the places you want to visit and handle easily.

We were walking through a marina after the Miami boat show years ago, when a Hatt sales rep called out to us for a tour of a new 50' sportfish. Nice boat, but I was all over this guy about the 6300. He had the same opinions, but he said that everyone who had one complained about fuel consumption. I think most of them have Cat 3412's. They're fast, but this was one of the what - 5? boat sales guys in the country who wasn't an idiot, so I took his opinion seriously.

It seems to go against the grain of such a hot looking boat, but I've wondered how she would behave at displacement speeds for extended periods. Would stabilizers be a viable option? I don't know - maybe by the time you write that check you don't care about big fuel bills.

if ur looking for a 45, get mine....ud be a happy camper for sure. plastic has got the cummins and gold package and that be it. all old raymarine stuff, does have a flat screen in the salon, but not near as nice as my setup. he does have the cablemaster in the back. my electronics blows any 45 da away--dual furuno nav net vx2 10.4" color screens, , furuno 4kw 64nm open array, new dsc radio, rd30 display. kept the raymarine gps/loran for backup. did keep the a/p. all new cockpit carpeting and all new burlwood panels. isenglass shows its age....that's my number one thing to make sure the next boat has, no isenglass, and if dancer style , no canvas. it seems to me the non canvas dancers are the sovran, neptunus cabrio or the new 60 da and 55 da. not many options. i want a good cruising boat for 2 couples with no ladders/canvas/isenglass. i go to bed convinced that be the 68 sport lazz and then wakeup, get to work, look at the checkbook and I am so happy and so convinced that boat be my current 450 da and disregard the minor isenglass/canvas/no couple violations that boat presently has. isn't reality a wonderful thing? and, then the bean dreams start again, by 1000, my brother and i have talked us in to getting a king air 350, noon, it is a place on kiawah for a boat and center console and by evening and YW, got the boat's name, harbor, and closest airport all picked out.

man, i dont know a thing about those 63 rph but one thing i got tohave is stairs to the bridge vs a ladder and it appears those 63s have ladders. i busted up my foot and knee in 01 and going down ladders w/ a torn pcl is not the best scene for me.

but, ru telling me ud take the 63 over teh lsx ? surely not a lazzara 68 sport.?? here's the one matt has --maybe the 1650h is not too good a thing.

http://yachtworld.com/core/listing/...Length=63&man=hatteras&slim=quick&searchtype=

if you lose the link , it is yw = 1790-1720061. i am not too familar with the boat, walked it at MBS in feb 05 and that was it. agree it is a good looking boat. didnt know about fuel consumption but probably one of those 80+ gph at cruise? do you recall if it has a day head? or is it downstairs to the staterooms?

have you looked at the 58 tiara? it's going to be at lakeside on 8 sep. i'm either going to drive or if lake = nice, boat on down.

Your 450 sounds like a very nice example. If you bring it by CP, I wouldn't mind a tour. I'm still using all the original Raytheon stuff. Worst plotter EVER, so I only use it as a back-up. The old green-screen CRT aint pretty, but I've never had complaints about the radar reception, so I just can't justify throwing it all out. That old auto-pilot is one of my best friends.

If you can't tell, boat shopping is a hobby of mine - I just find it to be part of the fun of the boating lifestyle. There hasn't been a 460DA or 480DB on the used market that has escaped my attention for several years now.

The 6300 has what could be called "hybrid" stairs - somewhere in-between stairs and a ladder. A lot like what Carver uses on their Voyagers. I have a torn ACL too, so I can relate, but the bridge access wouldn't keep me away from the Hatt. (especially considering how nice the pilothouse is) No day-head.

That's an interesting example of a 6300 - factory extended, huh? It appears to have been nicely maintained, but I'm with you - that's a LOT of hours on those 24 holes. Sooner or later, someone will be facing some seriously ugly mechanic invoices.

Yeah, I'd take a Hatt 6300 over the 75 LSX. Somewhere between those boats is a line that limits how one can use the boat. I wouldn't want to scratch entire islands off as possible destinations because they can't accomodate a 75 footer. In the meantime, I've seen a 65 Marquis slide into Dock 11 at Cedar Point. (another of your neighbors no doubt?!)

The pics I've seen of the 58 are beautiful. Seems to take a shameless page out of the SeaRay design catalog, but I guess there's nothing wrong with that.

Did you get up to Michigan?

have you heard anything about that TR_1 autopilot? the club searay guy JIM says that is a pretty awesome unit.

Saw you talking on some cruiser forum chirping heavily about a 53 express? nice boat? surely not a tiara class sovran, but ok?

aksing toledo beach to send me info on their 63 hatt. for the same money you can get that 68 searay up in detroit--i guess if you would take 63rph over lsx, duh, the 68 sss would not even qualify for dinghy status? speaking of dinghys, i just ripped a nice 10 inch on the port tube. stupid mistake at the dinghy poker run and i am messing around taking off the spider on this guy's head and decided at the same time to ram into the edge of a steel dock that was not protected. what a dumb ass i be.

mhyc has two 65 marquis....sweet boats too.

didnt even start teh engines this weekend. funny thing, my mechanic looked at my generator and saw the mounting bolts came out....??? what the heck is with that. hardly used the gen. he's bringing come alongs to line up the holes and replace the bolts.

watched the dvd FRACTURE--get it , good way to spend a rainy nite on DAS BOAT>

no mich yet. do you have any trips planned? i hope for lakeside on the 7th, the CP boat show, following week and one more run to detroit. maybe oct 6 run to detroit, but the lake would be all but iffy then.

one last bean dream question, why the 63rph over the 64 and u'd take it even over the lazz 68 sport?

If you're still looking for a 450 Dancer...look me up...we have one in stock where I work :-)

1996 with Cummins 450C's

Kenny, yours is the 450DA we're talking about! (and I'm quoting YOU when I said "they swear it wasn't a repower")

I still think it's strange that a '96 has those engines, and I still want to take it to the show and see how it runs. just a standing offer...

John,

nope, I'm not familiar w/ that autopilot.

A 53 Express? Was that me? I'm not sure what a 53 Express is? What make?

Ok, I'm going to have to change my answer. We started talking about the LSX on Saturday night, and by the end of the conversation, I was all worked up again. I might have to admit that I like it even more than 6300, even if there are only 2 places I'd dock it at PIB and Kelley's would be out of the question... It's one helluva machine.

Who's listing the 680? I haven't seen one this side of the Mackinac Bridge!

I just like the interior layout of the 6300 over the 6400 - especially the galley. The Laz 68 is incredible, but again, it's just so MUCH boat for this area, and I'm only guessing, but I think the more simple styling of the Hatt will age better.

No more trips planned. I'm sure we'll make another run or two up to the islands, then we'll head back up to MacRay for the winter sometime in early Oct.
