Maine Boatbuilders Show

Rod, I may be up for that. I like that show. It's a different kind of show. I've been a couple of times before.

You want to go?

Looks like a Saturday appearance for me too - we should all hook up.

I think I can still make it. I'll check with the boss.

Rod, looks like I can make it, but I would have one of my kids with me, Michael, the oldest. He won't let me go without him!

Great Steve - looking forward to it. I'm looking at getting there about 10-ish. It's always a great show so I'm expecting Maine's boatbuilding heritage to come thru strongly again this year. It'll be cool to meet Michael, too. Maybe drag 40, Karen and whomever else along. Perhaps a late lunch run for some fine Maine chowdah's in order.

Sounds good. I enjoy this show a lot, as it's very different from the regular "glits and glamour" fiberglass shows.

How different? This weekend is my wifes birthday and I can't think of a better gift than a trip north to Portland, Me. The website shows a lot of exhibitors, wholly cow!!!! We would be going on Saturday afternoon, depending on freakin snow of course. We will be the ones with the big black Newfy Dog, stop us and say hi.

It's in an old style warehouse, lots of downeast style boats, stuff like that. Don't expect to find a Chaparral or Sea Ray there. Sabre, Hinckley, etc. I love this show.

Michael and I will get there around 10 on Saturday. Rod, you still going?

We are going. The snow is supposed to let up. You guys convinced me, we've been doing the New York city glitzy boat show for years, cape cod boat builders was OK, but the list of exhibitors this weekend is very impressive. Plus it has been awhile since we have been to the LL Bean store in Portland.

My son won't leave me alone about it. He was so disappointed when it was snowing (go figure!), I have to take him. I should be there around 11 or so, maybe a bit earlier. I know Rod (Riverbed) is still going too.

Count me in. I'll be there about 10. In addition, there's another show for the fiberglass lovers (the Maine Boat Show) at the Cumberland County Civic Center - less than a mile away plus plenty of fine restaurants and pubs in between. I'll be the one with the glasses, whte hair and handlebar moustache. Wait a minute. It's Maine. We all look like that. Even the ladies. Feel free to check in on the cell: 617.767.8029. Crank calls are welcome. I have no life...
Cheers -
RB

Mistakenly put this in ATC but it's probably more of a New England thing. Anybody else brave the weather and go?

There's something to be said about attending a boatshow as a major winter storm is winding down outside the venue's doors. There's no one there and you pretty much have the run of the place - and in the case of this weekend's Maine Boatbuilders Show in Portland, it wasn't a bad thing. The MBS isn't your typical boat show where the visitors are greeted by sales staff. At this show, the people explaining the boats attributes are the guys and girls that designed and hand built them. Everything from incredible wood designs on john boats, bass boats, dinks and day sailers to a Sabre 52 Salon Express, a tug, jet boats and cruisers - both power and sail. There was even a guy who made his own brass fittings and a guy who came up from Stoneington, CT who specialized in antique woodworking and boatbuilding tools. And the bulk of them were all made in boat years, large and small, up and down the coast of Maine. Sabre, Albin (OK, they're from CT, too), Hinkley, they were all there and you could see and hear the pride as they talked about their product. The show's closing today but if you ever have a chance to attend, do it! It's a special show for lovers of boating. Makes me want to take the shrink wrap off right now and at least sit in front of the chartplotter as the snow melts outside...

Wow, what a show. We were there on Saturday afternoon. Gotta thank Riverbed and Steve for the comments. Unbelievable works of art. The style, variation, craftsmanship and most of all pride. No hard selling going on, just people that wanted to talk your ear off of what they have done and can do in the future. Loved the building. Steve you said it right, its an old warehouse. Thanks again. Still kind of pissed at the snow plow that dumped a load of snow on our windshield as we went under an underpass in Saco and broke our windshield. Oh well, thats boating.
