In the early planning to vacation at Nantucket or Marthas Vineyard late July early August.

I live on the South Shore of Long Island.

Plan to head to Block for a few days then to either of the 2.

We will be with at least 5 kids 10+ years old. Need a pool.

Any suggestions?

You will get an ear full positive and negative from the LICC guys about Champlins. But if you're looking for a Marina on BI and have kids, that's the one. Shops, games, pool, etcc.

As for MV, of the three main choices, of Vineyard Haven, Oakbluffs, and Edgartown, Oak Bluffs is your best bet. The town runds the Marina in the inner harbor. From there, all the attractions of restaurants, stores, carosel, etc.. are right there. All though be aware that pedestrians walk along the sidewalk and piers and can look right down into your cockpit and cabin. Not very private if that's what you're looking for. Vineyard Haven is a nice town with several Marinas. None of the names come to mind. I even stayed at one. The town is nice and fun, but not as kid oriented as Oak Bluffs. Edgartown is a great town. But not really kid oriented and they have very limited slip space, mostly for bigger (50ft+) Yachts. Most transient space is moorings.

Nantucket I believe (have not cruised there yet) the only option is Nantucket Boat Basin. All slips are right in the heart of the town. That's a quick rundown. Hope it helps. Chime in with other questions.

Nantucket Boat Basin is the only place to get a slip. This is probably the best marina in NE, IMHO, but oddly enough does not have a pool. I've been bringing my kids there and it is they're favorite place. Take the chutney to the beaches (go to south beach for the waves) and plan on renting bikes to drive around island. The scenery, shops and atmosphere can't be beat. Of course this all comes with a $$$ as the marina is expensive but you won't find better service. If you do, let me know where it is!!

We've stayed (a very long time ago) in edgartown at, not positive of the name, Harborside hotel. Its right next to Mad Maxx which i don't recommend. The cool thing about Harborside is you get access to the pool and jacuzzi which the kids loved! Downside is they only have water, no power at the dock so we never stayed long and ran the genny as needed.

Children's Beach is a 10 minute walk from the Nantucket Boat Basin - little or no wave action, lifeguards, nice. A few minutes farther is Jetties Beach, also with lifeguards, a good place for lunch and snacks and some waves but usually no surf to speak of. Nantucket Boat Basin isn't cheap but its location couldn't be better. There is a Grand Union across the street and probably 50 restaurants and bars in walking distance. As TimHenn said, you might want to rent or bring bikes but you can get pretty much anywhere on the island using NRTA, the jitney service.

Menemsha harbor in MV should not be overlooked. It is a quaint little fishing village with lots of "simple water play" activities.

There are lots of crabs and fishies around. Great sunsets, nice small beach. Inner pond is good for exploring. The kids older than 10 or so; if you have a tender can have a great time in the shallows.

Nice fresh fish, showers, bus service, ice cream shop, coast guard station.

It depends on what your kids like to do.
Our kids find this harbor the best from P'town all the way down to Block?? Go figure right. It is so simple to amuze them "sometime"

Five kids on the boat, I would assume any thoughts of privacy are long gone!

Thanks all for some great ideas.

spj. total of 5 kids total on the trip between all boats.
My one, once hes out for the night nothing wakes him up ; )

Need to have some grown up activities as well. Nantucket boat basin sounds like there might be
a lot for all.

Thanks
