Can anyone tell me if what marina's have floating docks in the middle river area? I have been to Weaver's before and love the new docks and the managment, however, I had the boat there for bottom painting and noticed a LOT of mosquitos. When I picked my boat up in the morning, I had to cover my mouth as I was taking off the canvas because I was inhaling so many. I have never seen that many mosquitos before! Currently at Bowleys.

Cutter Marine has several floating docks. I'm not on one (fixed bulkhead), but enjoy the marina pretty well. Rarely affected by the wind because of location. About a 20 min. no wake cruise, though.

As a former live aboard at Weavers, the bugs are NOT mosquitos, but "midges". The bug looks similar to a mosquito, but they have no biting apparatus and accordingly cannot 'hurt" you. A nuisance - absolutely!. I know Sam Weaver has been working with the U of Maryland and others to try to solve the issue - at last report, no suitable remedies have been identified, but not because they are not trying...

Not to intentionall hijack the thread but...

Holy bluecrabs, Batman[:-batman]... where have you been, Jim??!!!![:-pirate]

The bugs at Weavers have not been bad at all this year; so far. Lots of clean up energy has been expended in Back River, per haps that has helped.

Yeah, really!!! Been a long time and even longer since I saw you last up on the Sassafras.

We had an encounter with "midges" on the St. Johns river at Palatka, Fl. a few years ago. Tied the boat up at the marina at the Holiday Inn, got up the next AM and the boat was BLACK with them ..what a mess!!

Thanks for the feedback so far. Chris, do the midges just get bad on occaisonal days? I was tied off on the far seawall and every boat was just plastered with them. I was wondering if I just hit a "bad" day because I can't imagine living with that on a routine basis.

I have been there 3 years. Some days have been really ugly; lee side of the boat will be cluttered with bugs; both dead & alive. Up wind side will be fine. This year has been relatively easy to deal with so far. However it has been cool until last week or so. Things may change with the warmer water. Weaver's was spraying the dock areas in the evening; seemed to help a bit. There is an ongoimg effort by the county & state to clean the Back River headwaters up as well. That may be helping this year as well. We figure that it is a small price to pay for having a clean marinay that is easy to get to & fairly priced, with good docks & showers. Boating is, after all, a compromise in so many areas.

MikeeH et al,

I will probably have to give up my "Delaware Jim" moniker, as we are now full time live aboards In Little Creek (Norfolk VA) opposite the Navy Base. We sold our Delaware house a couple of weeks ago and brought the boat to Little Creek over Easter weekend.

I'll still monitor stuff here periodically... now for a new moniker...

When our kids were young, and we got hit with midges, they took the vacuum cleaner and sucked them up.
We also tried not turn on any lights by the salon glass sliding door. It was, open the door quick, close, then turn on any lights needed. We kept a small light on in the forward state room away from the salon door. This seemed to help keeping them outside.
It's amazing how those bugs hang on when you're on plane at WOT!

Porters on Seneca Creek has a floating pier.
Quick access to the Bay and about 15 minute cruise to Middle River. Showers and pool. Decent marina.
Middle River can get a little busy with traffic. Seneca is calm and quiet.

Tradewinds is in Frog Mortar, up Middle River. All piers float. It is not expensive and the people there are as nice as I have met. No bugs.
