Heard a rumour that MarineMax bought Jones Inlet Marina in Freeport and told all boaters they have to get their boats out this week. Can anyone add some clarity to the rumour?

WOW i just called there. They said there CLOSED !

HUMMMMMM

That's a pretty big marina, a good amount of big beam boats, plus a huge yard for storage. Last night my neighbor mentioned that his friend got a letter from them saying he has to get his boat out by 10/1. If it's true, then that is just horrible. At least let them finish out the season.

Don't these guys have contracts with an end date?

If so, then they can't tell you to get out unless the end date is 9/30.

Most contracts run 4/1 thru 9/30 for boat dockage and winter storage is a separate contract.
At least when I was at Oakdale that is how it worked.
Usually they sign winter contracts in August though, so I would be suprised if people don't already have contracts for the winter, but there must be a clause in there.

That really sux for all those boats, that is a huge marina.

I dont think the place was ever half full. Nice facilities though..

They are just being friendly to their future customers.....and fellow boaters !

Rumor has it that MM had to do something because of the deteriorating situation with the present spot at SS3.

If JI was only half full, that is testimony to how bad this season was. There were empty slips in my own marina all season and alot of boats left on the hard.

Now thats a good rumor. Last time I checked MM was in the boating business, why would they buy it and tell all the boaters to get out. I would think with the current market what it is, they would want all the business they could get. Maybe one of you guys with all the connections to MM or Paul and Matthew could shed some light. How about NY Weasel, who sent the letter to your friends neighbor? Not that I want to add to any rumors, but it was my understanding that a developer was looking to put up condo's there. That sound a bit more believable than MM buying it just to go and throw boaters out. Just my 2cents

I've stayed there 3 times in the past 4 years while in Freeport for the shark tournament. Nice marina, all new docks, plenty of big slips. I've never seen it more than half full though even 3-4 years ago.

From what i can weed tru the marina was owned by a realty company.... With the various markets in the ****ter... well this is the end result. The same company tried to build condo on an adjacent lot... They screwed the pooch on that as well and had to sell off that project...

I emailed Goldfarb Properties, the owner of Jones Inlet, asking whether condos were coming, and got the following response:

Absolutely not we border on Wetlands and nothing but a Marina can be
here.

Spoke to another marina owner, plus a boater who keeps his boat there, both said that the owner closed the marina down because it was out of money. They only had 25% of the slips rented this year, and it is cheaper to close it down then keep it running. My friend had to move his boat from Jones Inlet to Ocean Marine. Not sure if he is re-opening in the spring, and neither heard anything about MarineMax.

If I'm not mistaken this is the place I went to for Crusader parts a couple of times. He was pretty well stocked and came in handy for the occasional last minute item when web order wouldn't do it. Too bad. It was a nice place.

Ron,
He is or was a Crusader dealer, so your probably right.

FYI

Latest I heard on this was that they were losing alot of money and would lose less by closing than remaining in operation.
