We have 1993 330 Mariner (bought last year) and when taking a shower it is difficult to turn the pump on and off without getting a lot of water on the floor. When in the shower, our door opens out from the left side, and the switch is located under the sink on the right.

Would it harm the sump motor to leave it run as long as the water is still running? I always turn it off when it starts making a noise after it has drained the standing water.

If so, I guess the solution could be to move the switch or reverse the door, but wanted to check with other Mariner owners to see what they do.

Thanks,
Stu

the pump is a diaphragm style pump and is designed to stay running the entire time you take a shower...it will not damage the pump.

most sumps are bilge pumps and they can run dry for a while, Diaphragm pumps should be fine too... but dont' assume that in the 14 years prior to buying it that someone didn't replace the pump with an impeller pump!!! check for yourself.

it woudl be much much much easier to put a float switch in that sump, this is how most shower sumps are rigged.

it's not a sump on that boat Pascal...it's a pump plumbed directly to the floor drain of the shower

ok... then it's even more tempting for a previous owner to put in a self priming impeller pump. always check what could have been modified !

Appreciate the input. I will check to make sure it hasn't been replaced with an impeller pump.

Yeah, if there hasn't been any improper modifications you should be fine in letting it run...

For some reason Carver has been a fan of non-sump showers. My old 2895 had one, but my current boat has the pump right in line. I did away with the original pump which made a lot of noise, and put a newer unit in, which is supposed to be able to run dry. In my boat its not a big deal to start the shower and then reach for the switch, though. So I usually do that anyway, just to extend pump life a little more perhaps. When I'm done I let it run and go "glump glump glump" for about 30 seconds to make sure all the soap is out of the lines...

My 1988 Mariner had the Diaphram pump, worked good, but a little loud. My Santego had an open sump well, which the AC, Shower and bar sink drained into. It would smell after a while and needed cleaning often. So I got one of those orange tool boxes with the rubber seal in the lid from west marine. Then installed four small thru-hull fittings for the drain hoses and the pump float. No more smell, holds more and easy to clean!
