We have a 1989 Mariner. We love the large swim platform but at optimal canal speed the engine exhaust resonates under the platform and creates a loud "wa wa" noise and vibrations. Any ideas on how to take care of this?

Go faster? :)

My 1987 Voyager does the same thing. Acts like an echo chamber to some degree. As far as I'm concerned it's normal and there's nothing to fix. Annoying at times but normal.

Can you adhere any type of baffling or sound proofing (similar to what you might find in an engine compartment) under the swim platform?

Can you be more specific on which mariner it is? If if it the same as rnbenton's 28 mariner, I will add that mine does not have this problem but I also recently replaced my exhaust scuppers. rnbenton, do you have scuppers installed as originally equipped? I have seen many around here that have fallen off and have never been replaced (scarry).

It's possible your engines are not in sync. Try moving your throttles up and down a little at a time, maybe your guages are off.

The boat is a 32' Mariner. We just got back from a canal trip on the
Erie Canal and I fumbled with the throttles. Even when I got the engines perfectly insync at about 1000 to 1500 rpm which is great canal speed the noise was annoying. I think it is due to the large swim platform. The platform has no "ventilation" for the noise coming out of the exhaust. I think I am gonna cut a few areas out and install grids to help expell sound. Other than that the boat is a perfect boat! We love it!

Is exhaust "ventilation" for sound reducution the reason I see some boats with slots in their swim platforms? I have always wondered about that becuase I don't have any slots.

The boat next to ours has exhaust hose clamped to his exhaust ports which extends the exhaust port out about a foot. That would take care of your problem.

TurboWarp, I believe those slots are for wakes & following seas. Also when at anchor; it allows water to pass thru w/o ripping swim platform off.

carverman89: I would try attaching 45° or 90° elbows to existing exhaust.
