Twin 1995 7.4 carburated V-Drives
Both engines cool fine.
I noticed black grease under the raw water pump on the port side (grease was on the stringer) about 2 weeks ago. I cleaned it up. I checked again yesterday and there was more there, though not near as much. I wiped it up and we went for a 2 hour cruise. I checked again this morning and there was no grease.
My assumption is this pump is packed with grease and a seal has broken. It's going to be a bear to replace as we have V-Drives and the front of the engine is at the back of the engine compartment. I can barely see the pump yet alone get access to it. I think I will need to remove the exhaust pipes and the fresh water cooling heat exchanger to get at it. It also looks like the fuel pump is tied to this same pulley.
Question, is this pump packed with grease? I am assuming it's the pump as I cannot trace the grease to anything else. If it is the pump, is it safe to keep running the engine (full system fresh water cooled)? Is it one of those things they may go years and be Ok or one day it just goes? Last, if I do need to replace it, any pointerssuggestions on getting access to it (to make it an easier job) to remove and to install it?
