Have twin 2001 5.7 Merc/Bravo IIIs had impeller go in April and engine overheated to 200-220 or so. Mechanic replaced impeller and ran fine at idle speed, but then took a short run of 10 minutes at planing speed and when came down noticed smoke coming from engine compartment. Turned out the port riser, of the port engine, overheated and was melting/smoking the rubber elbow from riser to exhaust.
Per the gauge the engine never overheated and only noticed b/c of smell/smoke. Checked the engines w/ infrared gun and temp of port riser was 270+, manifold was 190. Starboard side of the port engine was fine and registered at 170 and 115.
Question what would cause just the one side of the engine to overheat?
