I have a 1971 boat with a 140 HP I/O Mercruiser. Not sure what the outdrive is (numbers worn off outer tag). I just installed a new shifter/throttle control and cables. The cable from the engine to the transmission is completely out of adjustment. I can't figure out the (very confusing - to me) instructions in an old Mercruiser repair manual. Not sure which cable to adjust first, or exactly how. I would guess to (first) set the transmission in neutral and set the brass barrel so the cut-off is in the indent, then tackle the remote shifter. But so far it hasn't worked too well. Any advice (step by step -- for an amateur) would be greatly appreciated!
