I own a '92 Chaparral with a 4.3L Mercruiser and it won't go into reverse (it finally when into reverse after many attempts going from forward to reverse). I disconnected the cable that goes to the outdrive from the engine and pulled it all the way out ... the prop does not lock when manually rotated in the reverse direction. When I push the cable all the way in, the prop locks into forward gear. I read in an earlier post that it might be a bent fork in the bell housing, could it be a worn reverse gear or the shifter linkage inside the drive not working ... or is it suppose to lock the prop in the reverse when the cable is pulled all the way out?
