I am replacing my engine. It's a 454 c.i. Mercruiser with a borg warner trans and TR outdrive. I bought a "New" long block and decided to buy the Mallory Distributor Kit made especially for Marine use. Now the question. The engine has a box mounted to the port side manifold riser. It called "Ignition Amplifier"
according to the Manual I got for the engine.
The old engine had an HEI distributor. The ignition amplifier has 2 wires that go to the distributor (one white with red stripe and one white with green stripe). They attach to studs sticking out of lower section of HEI distributor. Also there are 3 other wires.
One coil positive, one coil negative and a ground. The new distributor has no "studs".
It has a wiring harness with 3 wires. Red to positive on coil, green to negative on coil and a ground wire. Do I need to replace the Ign. Amp.? I believe the new ones have only 3 wires according to pictures I have seen. This one works great. I'd hate discarding it.
