Please see the bottom of this thread for more info as this show is coming together (updated 1/25/07) ...

FYI - the 3rd Annual Metro Boat Show is coming to the Westchester County Center Feb 9-11...

Some new highlights:

(1) Boating Safety Classes are being held by a marine training agency that offers in depth, high quality classes suitable for certification in states that require it, but also for those boaters who want to increase their knowledge through hands-on training in various aspects of boating. There is a fee for these classes, which will be held over parts of 2 days at the Show, but the second day's Show admission is free. If you or anyone you know is interested let me know by PM or post on this forum...

(2) A Marine retail store, complete with factory reps and displays of electronics and other equipment, offering discounts on boating accessories, will be at the Show...

Plus of course the usual assortment of boat brands and all that good stuff. Its a low cost way to get boating fever and inhale some styrene in February. Of course, we are all hoping we don't get a blizzard, which is what happened to us last year. That would be just my luck to have it happen twice...

Pete, are you still connected with Pennybridge & the Chaparral line? This was a nice show last year for a winter get away, good luck with the classes, they look to be very worthwhile. Say hi to Chip, he is the Administrative Manager of County Center. He introduced me to Linda over 40 years ago! Can he leave me a ticket at will call?

I'm sure that can be arranged, George. I think I've met Chip before...

We still do some stuff with Chaparral, but it didn't turn out to be as extensive as we first thought. Pennybridge will be at the Westchester Show though, so if you know somebody interested in their boats that wants to come please let me know and I'll get them into the show and help them meet the right people...

Pete,

I am interested in the boating safety courses, if they are good. I have been boating for 3 years, but I figure it can't hurt. what are the costs?

Jeff

Jeff, we're running a special whereby you pay $65 a head (plus a $10 registration fee that is sent to NY State which you do on your own) and it includes admission to the Show for both days the classes are being held (2nd day is free). So you do 4 hours of the class each day and then are free to roam the Show for the rest of the time...

I came up with that one. I thought it would help people who might be "on the fence" and wanting to buy a boat, but not be pressured into making a decision that day by the dealer. So they could take a class, then go strike a deal on their dream boat, and tell the dealer they'd "be back" the next day after sleeping on it...

This helps dealers too, because most "be backs" never come back!!!

BTW, if anyone comes to the Show, be sure to come see all the travel info I'm collecting from upstate tourism agencies. I made the mistake of telling them "hey, I've got a free display here, send me all you've got." Well, Warren County (Lake George) sent me 6 BOXES!!! I don't want to carry all that stuff home, so please come and take some of it...

ok, thanks Pete. How/where do you sign up. AT the show or do you need to do it before hand.

Jeff

Pete,
Good Luck at the show, hope you make some money.

Walter

Jeff (and anyone else), you need to sign up beforehand. The phone number for the classes is 800-288-8199. Ask for Bob and tell him Pete from the Metro Boat Show referred you...

Walter, from your lips to God's ears ;) ...

Pete,
You sound like an honest guy.... in the long run you will win.... just don't give up......I live by these words in business (Thank You My Friend, Joe Kirkwood)that I was told by an older man that was a VP of a very large telephone company. I worked for him for six months(I was 20 years old) and he took a liking to me, I started my telephone company at 21 years old.

He told me this:
1- Be honest and treat people the same as you would want to be treated.
2. Never ask anyone to do something you would not do yourself.
3. Do whatever you need to do to hang in there during rough times, rough times are good, rough times shakes out the businesses that do not do the right thing, when the dust clears, you will be stronger.
4. The two most important things in businees is your balls and your word, if either of them fail you will not succeed.

It has worked for me, although the balls thing gets less and less since I have more to lose..... this is a problem that I know needs correcting.....

Walter

Geez I don't know Walter - since I'm on blood thinners I've been having trouble with the "balls" thing :)...

But thanks for the good advice. I try my best. I'm glad it has worked for you over the years. I hope to follow in your footsteps as an entrepreneur...

I wanted to update everybody on the status of this Show. We've got some great stuff coming up, including FREE STUFF (no catch, I promise!)

Some highlights:

(1) I mentioned before about the Boating Safety Course - this is a real value and if you are planning to take this course anytime soon please consider doing it at our Show. The price may be a couple of dollars more than the USCGA or USPS charge, but from what I understand it goes above and beyond the basic course fare. Plus, Bob Perogine, who's giving the class, is not only a State licensed instructor but also a member of the Rockland County Sheriff's Department, and if you boat on Haverstraw Bay he'll likely be one of the guys pulling you over. So maybe it pays to get to know him now ;) !!!

(2) Of course, the boats...

(3) Marine Accessories, including demonstrations. For example, the latest Stearns inflatable vests will be demoed for people by a factory-authorized representative. Also Humminbird and Garmin electronics, and Navionics Gold and Platinum software. This is great stuff, and the factories have been gracious enough to send me demonstration equipment so we're going to have a pretty cool setup, a first for a small regional show...

(4) A Real Estate Marketplace - featuring much of the latest Waterfront real estate, as well as insurance and financing. If you or anyone you know is interested in a waterfront house come see all the latest offerings (including some new developments) under one roof...

(5) FREE fishing seminars, and information from the Hudson River Fishermen's Association...

(6) FREE tourism info from all around New York State. This is my pet project. Charlie Melchner was gracious enough to donate space so I could get tourism brochures from all across upstate NY, including canal info, Adirondack Lake info, as well as towns along the Erie and other attractions. I might be able to get some 1000 islands and stuff like that, but I'm still working on it. IMHO this alone is worth the price of admission to the Show, so you can plan your next boat trip...

I'm sure there will be other stuff, but my memory fails me at present. I am still working on getting this Show together and so I am not getting any sleep or dinner. I guess I'll have plenty of time to sleep in mid-February!!!

Oh, and please pray it doesn't SNOW!!!!!!

LOL Pete - six boxes from our friends at Warrent County Travel and Tourism, eh? They're a good bunch of folks. Been clients of ours for years. And it really is a beautiful place to visit, live and boat.

Yes it is!!! So tell your friends to come to my boat show and take some of this free literature so I don't have to carry it around. Last year I carried the boxes home from the Rockland show and had a heart attack the next day!!!

ohhh, thats bad!!! They should have a booth and bring the stuff themselves!

Alright Pete, I've signed up for the class. So, I will try and drop by and say hi over the weekend. Are you going to be there both sat. and sunday? And where can I find you?

Jeff

I'll be there the whole show. I'll likely be wearing a red Mahopac Marina shirt and have a colored badge around my neck (most other people have black and white badges). Or give me a shout - 914-671-2433...

Good luck with the course!!!

PS - as I mentioned we have a ton of stuff from upstate travel bureaus - for anyone thinking about coming that alone is worth the price of admission!!!

PPS - we'll also be having a pretty good electronics display. We got some stuff on consignment from Humminbird and Navionics, and one of our vendors has some Raymarine stuff as well as some neat gizmo that enhances cell phone service in places like upstate NY where it stinks, or offshore. He does custom installations - I just met him today and he's a nice guy. This fellow just got out of the Navy, and his brother is working with him who is still in the Navy. So I'm sure they know their stuff!!!

Oh and yes there will be a few boats there, too :) !!!

Pete,
I may have missed it but what are the hours of the show on the 11th?

Show hours are:

Friday 1-8
Saturday 9-8
Sunday 10-6

That's for the public. For me they are something like Thursday 12-12, Friday 12-12, Saturday 12-12, and Sunday 12-12. Then you want to know why I had a heart attack the day after the Rockland Show last year!!!

Pete, I saw Rick Zoller last night...he said he was just talking to you yesterday. Apparently they're bringing down a 28' Cruisers, a couple of Regals and some jet boat stuff...moving them this morning. If I get the chance, I might swing by but probably won't.

Yeah, Rick is a big supporter of our Show. He and I get to talk a lot this time of year. They're doing so much down there - both Regal AND Cruisers, plus the jetskis. I hope he has a good show with us.

I hope to see you if you're in the neighborhood. If not, let me know if you want some travel stuff and I'll save it for you.
