Miami/ Key west

Miami and key west are two totally different areas. For real laid back fun, go Key West. For a Great spot for Restaurants, very hot women, Go Miami. About renting a boat, have no clue, in Miami, I would ask Pascal, this is his neck of the woods.

For beach, babes, and bikinis (with or without tops) - Go to the South Beach part of Miami Beach.
For booze, Buffett (Jimmy Buffett), and chilling out -- Hit up Key West.
Lots of good boating from Miami down through the Keys.

IMO, Key West is not even on the list for a selection of "good beach areas".
Moreover, it's no longer very laid back for vacationers,
especially with the increasing numbers of cruise boats disgorging tourists for quick brief visits every day.
I don't intend to disparage KW - it's still an intriguing, entertaining place - just addressing your intention for beach area short vacation.
FWIW - I would recommend staying closer to Miami, South Beach or the more easterly Keys.

Indeed if you go to KW for the beaches, you will be disappointed, this applies to the keys in general. Very few natural beaches, it s all about fishing, snorkeling, diving. And drinking, as well driving slowly past strip malls.
There a few nice resorts with good private beaches, like Little Palm or the cheeca lodge, although not cheap...
I woudl think Miami beach maybe a better choice, aLthough again can't say the beaches are that nice. Key biscayne is probably better beach wise, especially the northern end of Crandon park.
Lots to do by boat around here, there are a few rental including American Watersports here in th grove.

I don't know what part of Key West you were staying in but its still as laid back as its ever been. I have a place on the opposite side of the island as the "tourists" and its perfect. Laid back and calm. Even going downtown at night, its the same as its been for many years
