signal has been pretty good so far but it was intermittent in the Neuse. We're at Whitaker Yacht something in Oriental NC.... Rustic is the best word but friendly like most of these places! a little skinny coming in, 8' or so, but a a 100' Hargrave came in after that with no problem. Docked next to us on the Tee.

continuing north tomorrow, probably going to anchor out somewhere on the North side of teh Albemarle sound / North River. Friday up to Norfolk and into the lower Ches. will probably anchor out as well somewhere on the West side, unless the weather gets too bad. Then Annapolis on Sat.

Liz, saw a Canadian sailboat name Flutter Bye today... :-)

George, I guess Navionics is a different chip than CMap NT. I just can't understand what the folks at Cmap where thinking when they decided not to display marker numbers and show all lighted aids in red. It's really confusing to look at the plotter and see a RED flame, with no numbers when you're really looking for a Green!!

I'd guess that's the reason that you are paying strict attention to those strip charts... You can't go wrong using those.
 
We're headed for Belhaven's anchorage tomorrow. Then somewhere on Alligator River (don't recall a lot of big boat anchorage opportunities north of Albemarle. Probably tie up to one of the docks by the Great Bridge Dock Saturday, hang out in Norfolk or Hampton Sunday. Jog up to Deltaville Monday. Or something like that... want to end up in Baltimore next Friday. Spend a week or so there, then onward.

Well, Raymarine uses Navionics also. I was in a store looking at the chart for the beginning of Hawks channel where there are some crossing channel markers and none of the marker numbers were on the chart. It was like Pascal described, you had to move the cursor to the mark and press a couple of keys to get the marker number.

I have a Furuno NavNet Vx2 with the C-Map October, 2008 chart and the marker colors are correct. C-Map has a subscription service for $85 per year which ships you a new chart each year. I don't know how often they update the charts for the ICW, but I have compared the new chart to the older one for the Bahamas, and they are different.

I suspect that either your Furuno units are older (vx1?) or the charts are older. I would call Furuno and discuss the issue with them. It may be a "simple" software upgrade and a chart upgrade to get the marker colors correct. Furuno's east coast tech support number is 410-479-4420. If your calling after 5pm EST, you can call the west coast tech support at 360-834-9300 until 8pm EST.

I also have a portable Garmin 478 which has ALL US charts AND US roads preloaded. The Garmin charts have marker numbers on the chart. Even when zoomed out, the markers are large and readable.

On the Raymarine C and E series displays you select as one of the options the level of chart detail you want to display. It's all there if you want it. I believe there are three levels.
 
Bruce, sorry, just noted you question from yesterday. We have used these plotters from Baltimore to Big Pine Key, all kinds of channels, anchorages, etc. No issue with sounding detail, but as I pointed out, soundings for all charts are mostly out of date. The rasters and ENC's on my computer get updated monthly; little variance in detail from the chips, which is last year's update.
Deerows, those markers showed up just fine on my Furuno; Eric probably has right the tip for your Raymarine

and I'm missing this whole trip cause my computer won't support Google Earth and for some reason now when I click on the Webcam from his site all I get is a box with a red X in the upper left corner and it says the webcam is loading but it never does. Piece of crap computer..........

An older one that can't support the right level of DirectX.

We may not see or hear anything from Pascal until he gets to Norfolk as AT&T has next to no coverage in the areas that he is travelling through other than patchy coverage along major interstates. If he crosses under a bridge on a major interestate we may get a brief update.
AT&T converage up te Cheasapeake is also patchy over water so we may not see much till he gets to Anappolis.
 
Yep, they are certainly going through cell phone purgatory (or should I say Pungotory?) today. Coming down from Baltimore last September I had no issues with AT&T anywhere on the Chesapeake. Neither I or my buddy with Verizon had coverage for a good stretch of the Pungo-Alligator Canal, but I picked up faster and dropped off later than he did (that is, I had significantly better coverage) The Digital Antenna amplifier helped some with that for both of us. I understand that Verizon did some build out in the meantime, but haven't heard of any improvements from other cruisers in the A-P area. I'll be interested if anything has changed ATT wise when we head up there in the next few days.

Must be anchored. He's made no progress in an hour. Looks quite flat out.
 
Looks like they stopped in or near the North River in northeastern, NC. They're a little short of Coinjock and the North Carolina Cut (Coinjock Canal). After that, they hit Currituck Sound, the North Landig River, then the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal (Virginia Cut), then into the lock at Great Bridge. VA, then into the Elizabeth River, Hampton Roads, and finally the Chesapeake Bay.

In Coinjock (NC Cut) there is a restaurant, fuel, and an approximately 400 foot dock that runs parralel to the canal.

yep.. we anchored out just north of Albermarle sound, at the north end of the north river, jsut where it gets narrow into Coinjock. Very poor signal all day, until we got here... ATT and verizon both intermittent. I chose this spot, instead of BroadCreekd a few miles south figuring that we would get better coverage being close to conjock. seems to be the case!

Aligator River and teh canal before that are real boring... George, there are many spots to anchor north of Aligator river bridge, or where we are in the north river.

We're going to leave early tomorrow, I'd like to make it to somewhere just south of the potomac and anchor out again. Then Annapolis saturday afternoon...
