How can I remove what appears to be mildew from my white vinyl seats that are 13 years old. Common cleaners, bleach, and even lacquer thinner do not solve the problem. The only thing I've found to work is digging it out with a knive, and that is not practical. How about sanding the vinyl?

This is a long shot, but try making a thick paste of baking soda and water. Using a Mr Clean Eraser, scrub, scrub, scrub. Rinse the area well and let dry in the sun.

Best of luck!

Liz has the right idea. As she says let it dry in the sun but I would keep it out a day or so. We have had ink and rust on our vinyl that we thought we would never get out. After cleaning, the sun gets anything the cleaners could not.

Liz: Thank you for the great idea -- it appears to be working with your instruction to scrub, scrub, scrub. Ken: Thank you also, and I will bake it as you suggested.

A light chlorox solution is good for removing any type of mildew. Or any of its cousins. I frequently spray my patio furniture. The cushions are made of woven PVC or something similar. A treatment is usually good for 6 months.

Also good for keeping the algae out of your air conditioner drain system.

Jack,

Try using some Soft Scrub cleaner with the pot side of a sponge. Then rinse it off with a wet rag. I've been using it on the vinyl cushions and combing pads for years. Good Luck!

Jack,

Check out Home Cheapo, there are some cleaners on the market that are 'spray it on, rinse it off'.

Good Luck,

I just removed a bunch of mildew stain off my canvas using the Starbrite mildew stain remover... Spray it on and wait, no scrubbing just disappears as it dries out.

I have had good luck with the marine mildew stain removers such as Starbrite. My boat sat for a few years and had some mildew spots on the vinyl seats. Finally got back into boating last year. I sprayed the mildew area and most of it came out. The spots were barely noticable. During the summer of this year I noticed that the spost were gone. The only thing I can think is that the sun hitting it removed what little was left behind.
